I may have to order the PLX boost module and see how it compares to the Prosport.

 

Go with Spa man... Unless you want the PLX for logging purposes.

 

I would need to pull a few tricks in order to afford the spa gauges.

 

Hopefully next weekend we will be mostly moved in to the new house. Then it will be time to finally address some issues. However, I would like some input/opinions from you guys to see if you've had the issues before.

Issue 1: Transmission noise.
I'm still on my first everything transmission except for some synchro's and maybe a fork (although those are 70k old now). For the past week or so when I start up the car the clutch/pressure plate/throwout bearing have been making some seriously loud whirring noises. After a few minutes of operation and a few gear changes all noises but the throwout bearing go away. I'm thinking that my clutch is just very ready to be replaced. Surely the SARX crew has the specialized tools to replace a clutch...

Issue 2: AC not working
2 months ago my A/C started to flake out on me. I would put in refrigerant to the 'recommended PSI' and the air would be cold for about 2 weeks. This time began to shrink to about 2 days. Then it got cold enough that i didn't need to use it. However now when I put defrost on, since it tries to use the A/C compressor, all I get is extra noise and the compressor always trying to kick on. I looked online at the Dye kits and was kinda surprised at how much they cost. If it's a leak in the condenser I have been seeing stock condensers on ebay for like $50..that's pretty much the cost of the leak kit. But that assumes the leak is there. Any thoughts?

Issue 3:
This one I'm really not too sure about. For about 6 months I have been having a loud metallic rattle when I go over bumps coming from the right wheel well. When I jack the car up and try to find any loose nuts/bolts I come up empty handed. I have tried replicating the impact with a rubber mallet on the lower shock bolt and I can hear what seems like the hub rattling. However, within the last week when I go over a quick bump at 30+ mph the right wheel produces a metal scraping noise for several seconds. It sounds like a screw driver tip being held to a spinning brake rotor or something. That's the closest approximation I can come up with. If I apply the brakes the noise does not stop until I get below a certain speed. I THINK there is a difference in the pitch of the noise when I alter speeds, but it is minimal. Does this sound like a new wheel hub is needed? Bearing is shot? It's not a loud grinding noise like I have experienced before with a bad wheel hub bearing.

Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks. I'm sad I missed the Christmas party, but it took us WAYYY too long to find a rental truck in Kerrville.

 

1: Transmission noise can be cured with just a fluid change. When I got Hoss's car from his ex it was whining like crazy but I changed the fluid and it went away. I also change mine once a year and there is a noticable difference when I change it. I only use Mazda fluid, I don't use any other crap. My tranny has 134,000 miles on it.

2: The AC leak could be anywhere, if you really want to know we would have to leak test it. It is usually at the condenser. Mine leaked at the condenser and all I did was replace the seals and it has been fine. But I do plan on just replacing it.

3: Are you sure the dust shield is not hitting the rotor? Also, it could be a caliper issues, when mine was sticking it was making a similar noise. I have two sets of calipers so we can figure it out.

I changed the tranny fluid less than 10k miles ago so I don't think it is that. I was getting some noise before I changed it which went away after. My car now sits around 121,xxx miles and there is a definite difference between where my clutch grabs and Steve's car (which was around 60,xxx), for instance... that is before he sold it for the BMW. I'm thinking it is more than just fluid this time.

I checked the dust shield recently because I thought that it might be vibrating against the rotor, but I didn't see any rub marks on it and pushed it away from the rotor a little bit just to make sure. What I don't get is that the noise only happens when it's an abrupt impact (pot hole or bridge junction) and that the noise then goes away when speeds get lower. Sometimes it will go away at higher speeds so I'm really not sure at this point... caliper could be sticking though.. I will probably need to get a second set of ears and eyes on it.

 

have you tried jacking up that wheel and moving the wheel around? Does it wobble or move at all?

 

I would like to provide some alternative points of view although i agree with Scott in each aspect.

#1: Your throwout bearing if you have never replaced it is probably no longer there. If you saw the pics of mine and Scott's you would have been shocked. It may be causing noise even when not in use.

#2: Dose the heater always work? Have you ever done the fix on the controller module? Sometimes these random issues with the EV stuff can be a problem with a solder joint in the control unit.

#3: Could be you engine mount and it may only make noise when the engine shifts or you hit a bump. Or if it is sagging enough it may be causing binding in your suspension.


Maybe we will do something for new years!

 

My rear suspension squeaks with my coilovers. Worse on "flat" ground. Goes away with stock suspension. Plz help I am noob

My throw out bearing looked fine when I removed it, it only had 30,000 miles on it. Yours was fucked, but never really made any noise.

J8, squeaks are easily fixed with grease.

What type of grease did you use? also, is it a squeak or clunking? have you seen these?

 

I used lard. No I haven't seen those. What do they do?

 

Torsion release bearings for coilovers. lard is not a great suspension grease. It smells good though.

I do not recall the exact type of grease that was used, but it was appropriate for bushings and whatnot. How is that better than the really thin washer thing I have under my springs?

 

It's a bearing, it moves and releases the tension. The washer may not move. Are you running any preload? I can't think of where the squeak would come from. Maybe not from the coilovers?

 

There is actually dog food stuck in my hood from over 3 years ago because of mice. Side effect of being a country boy

 

Re: the AC I would do the UV dye test, you never know where it could be leaking from. could be bad seals in the compressor, could be a busted o-ring somewhere, might be the condenser, could be a leaky schrader valve, **** it could even be a leaking evaporator in the cabin...

Trans noise is somewhat normal, I wouldn't worry about it till its time for a new clutch.

The noise in the front of the car... I'll need to see it in person get the wheels off, car in the air etc. you might hear it from the right side of the car but it could be coming from anywhere.
