It's the same cel from not having a cat at all. Most states have a law around requiring dealers to make sure the cars they sell are emissions compliant. I'd look into the details of that plus what you actually have under there.

I thought it's also the code for failing CAT. But I'm still just reading a lot about many things at same time on this forums and may got it wrong.
Well I did 300 miles on the car, and CEL came up just a mile after I dropped in the new filter.
RIWWP - damn man, much respect for all the time you invested in writing all those guides.

Alright, if I could wait 2 months - I would go for OE cat. But Right now I can't drop $1000+ .
So, after reading various stickies and some other threads, I'm undecided on which would be the better cheap option:
-MagnaFlow 59959 welded on OE pipe,
or
- MagnaFlow Direct Fit Catalytic Converters 49150
I'm looking for something that would last about 2 years of regular driving + autocrossing 1-2 times a month, and I can close at around $500
I'll appreciate everyone's input.

And your buddy did the right thing. It was not a good buy. But was exactly the appearance package I wanted so decided to get it and save it from it's misery. Second time I did that even tho I sweared I'd never do it again.
Gladly, I already fell in love in this car so it's all worth it.
And I'm not sure yet if it's CAT, the code I receive is P0420 but I won't have time to actually look at the cat's honeycomb till Sunday. Thing is, if it needs replacement then I will need to act fast, as inspection expires in a week. Better be prepared so I know what to buy.
Found this in F/S section, but to me it looks pretty clogged already.

Yeah that one is on it's last legs. Just find an aftermarket cat and have it welded in. If it lasts, it lasts, if it doesn't then replace it every couple of years.
An example.

Do you know how much time you are allowed to fix any problems if you get rejected? That might buy you some time to decide on a solution.
Btw, I have about 400 miles on a new catless pipe and just had that CEL code pop up. I erased it with my Torque app.

If you're interested, I've got a full TurboXS exhaust setup (header, mid, exhaust, 3" all the way) that I'll part with for $500. I've enjoyed it, but it's a little loud for my newborn.

thank you for all for advice, now I'm trying to figure out if Davesport is any better than the Magnaflow,
and... trying to figure out why CATs with 3" openings are being recommended if we have 2.5" exhaust, just came back from work so didn't read into it yet.
Creto, thank you too for the offer. I looked up how it sounds on Youtube. But they all show it with replacement midpipe which is really loud. With cars I really like when they sound for what they really are, and I'd dig that note if it had 350hp. I get enough people trying to race me as it is.... truly, RX8 is a ricer magnet. And I leave racing for the track. aaaaaand it doesn't solve my CAT problem :/
I will see if i can find any videos of that TurboXS working with CAT on midpipe, if it's a little less loud and retains this nice low tone then maybe we can make a deal.

OK, so after reading, watching videos, and reading some more - decided to go with BHR catted n resonated midpipe.
- For me it's an affordable option of massing inspection,
- Seems to make exhaust go low, not loud, which is something I would like to achieve anyways,
- I'm buying it being aware I will need to weld in new CAT once in a while, but since the pipe is 3" I will have that MagnaFlow 59959 available as easy fit for cheap.
btw. we had some ugly weather in Houston on Saturday, heavy rain and flooding, was a bit unnerving to drive RX8 while seeing cars stalled every few hundred feet all the way home.
