Houston Living?

Alright so yesterday was the last day for me to get accepted to a different medical school (I've been accepted to UTMB in Galveston for a while), and I just heard from UT-Houston. That's where I really wanted to go, so it was a godsend.

Does anyone on here have some advice/insight into what apartments/condos/whatever I can look into? My fiancee will most likely be working in Sugar Land. PS: She has the worst allergies in the world, so some place decently new would be amazing.

Congrats man!

How much of a commute are you two willing to do?

Thanks! Not really sure at the moment. 30ish minutes? I'm not from a big city, so I'm not sure how far out that really is.

Just curious what are you studying to be specifically?

My dad is a doctor, I hope all works out for you, but with the political bullshit going on right now, I'd be frugal with my money if you know what I mean.

I'm keeping my options open. I'd really love to be involved in sports medicine or something similar at this point. I'm sure I will get to try everything and figure out where my heart really is. I totally see where you are coming from on the being frugal thing. The future is looking a little cloudy right now.

A good area to be around that is central to everything would probably be the 610 and 59 area.

You can hit up almost everything from those areas.

It depends what your rental budget is. Living in the middle of the city will cost more but will ultimately be more convenient for both. You'll be closer to school and her commute won't be that bad as it will be against traffic. I live right next to downtown. My wife works in Galveston and I work in Magnolia. Both are hour drives but since we both go against traffic it isn't that bad. I'd rather do this drive than to go half the distance while sitting in rush hour traffic.

I live in the Heights, I also am blessed to go against traffic. 10W to 610N to 290W. I am 7 minutes to downtown but Med Center is a bit further... 15 minutes maybe.

Pretty sure we have settled on an apartment by the med center. Rent here is freaking outrageous. One of the main things holding us back was that my fiancee has terrible allergies to dogs, cats, dirt, pollen, mold, etc. We were pretty much limited to brand new apartments and that pushed our rent up like $200/month. It will make every month an adventure coming up with the rent check, but that's life. No more rx8 parts for a while :'(

We have a 2 bedroom apt in Midtown right next to downtown. It is just under 1000 sq ft. Our rent just went DOWN to $1350 per month!!! It was $1500. It is also not the most expensive around as some near us can hit $2000 per month in the same size. I think our rent is outrageous. It's not a bad place at all but if it were 25 miles out in the suburbs, rent would be about $500 less per month for the same type of place. You could get a much larger and much nicer unit that ours in the suburbs for the same price. I am hoping to switch jobs soon so my wife and I can work on the same side of town and live on that side. Gas expenses will go down drastically and so would cost of living. By living on the same side of town we could save $500 or so per month and get back some of our time we spend driving.

Yea rent is really close to those numbers. Going from living at home and thinking $1000/month was nuts (highest in Waco btw), to this situation is pretty crazy.

It was sorta weird how the whole situation worked out though. Fiancee went to the education job fair with the idea we would live in League City and I would go to UTMB, so we marked off all the schools more than an hour away. Well she went to a booth without looking at the paper (darn girls) and got a job. Now it's 20ish minutes away from our place lol.
