Exclamation Houston/Austin (summertime) caravan to Lake Somerville

I was over at a friend's shop today and he supports several car clubs. He holds events on occasion and I'd like to see the Houston club have one at his place the first weekend in April for a flowbench tech session. He had a great idea today and I'd like to see who would be all for this so we can start getting it planned.

He is going to take his RV and camping gear out to Lake Somerville (near Brenam) one weekend this summer. The idea is that the Houston club and the Austin club each decide to have a scenic drive/caravan that day. Each club will meet up in the middle at the lake campsite. We'll do BBQ, hang out, etc... If you want to camp out for the evening, some people will too. If not, after a few hours each club can caravan home. No big deal. It is a little over an hour from each city 1 way so it would be a nice 1 or 2 day event depending on what you wanted to do. For those the decide to stay the night, we will most likely also have a boat on the water to go waterskiing, swimming, etc.

What does everyone think? Keith??? If we can get enough people to commit, this could be a great day for everyone to meet up. Trying to plan this for sometime in July or August to give plenty of planning time. We'd definitely get some great pictures of the cars with a lake backdrop. Let's make this happen guys. This is the closest thing we can have to a large southern gathering that is still fairly cheap.

sounds like a plan to me... maybe even the D/FW people too? (of course they have a longer drive)

I have some pretty nice maps of scenic drives in that area of the state too

You might have to work at it. Somerville is a pretty small shallow lake (not truly aesthetically pleasing, but hey...there are a few good areas). It is definitely a fun lake to play on though. Not alot of fishermen, so more room to ride jetskis or take a boat out. I am near Dallas but lived in College Station for years, so I would definitely be up for a trip back to Somerville. If you plan a weekend in the summer, you might want to find out when Hotter than Hell Harley Days is going to be there. I am not sure what month it is in but the lake will be packed with a bunch of drunk, half-naked (or fully naked) people on bikes that weekend.

I have some pretty good contacts up there... I will see what I can find out. I am sure Fred's buddy also has a good idea how things are up there.

There shouldn't be too many suprises if we start planning now. -- anyone who wants to be in on the planning feel free to email me at htxrx7@houston.rr.com and we can setup a dist. list.

It would behove us to keep the planning details offline until we get it all ironed out. Cool?

Sounds like fun to me. I'm in. Hopefully if I don't have to be out of town for work.

I'll let the other texasrxs members know to see who else wants to join in from Austin.

Actually I'm starting to think June is a better time to try it. That way if all goes well, we can do it again before the end of the summer.

Well, it depends on what part of June we get to do this in. I'm going to be spending almost the entire first half of the month in sunny Florida playing tourist in my old stomping grounds. We're also throwing in a trip to see the in-laws. So there will be plenty of driving around central Florida and Orlando, unfortunately it'll be in some piston powered rental car.

I did hand this off to our club president and our event planner so I'm hoping between the two of them and you folks in Houston that things will be hammered out over the next few months.

Feel free to drop by and visit our new site. The traffic and membership is starting to pick up. I'm working on setting up a mailing list for event notifications for the folks who were relying on Yahoo! for that information. As always you'll find us and a complete schedule of club events at www.texasrxs.org.

June will work for me, May is too close to our move in to the new house, and July is very busy for me. I will probably elect to return the same day, since it will be kind of warm for a tent w/o a/c.
