Good Guy: Jim @ JPR

After my local dealership wasted a bunch of my time and prolonged my driving on a badly clogged cat, Jim nailed and documented the diagnosis in an hour, which allowed me to get it covered under warranty at another dealership. I'm not happy I had to pay for indy shop time on a warranty issue -- but if my money had to go somewhere, I'm glad it went to JPR. Great guy, and I hope I can direct some more business to him in the future.

What and how did Jim @ JPR do to positively diagnose a clogged cat?

Before the appointment, he gave me some tips over the phone for things to pay attention to while I drove the car (I had Torque with an Bluetooth OBD dongle). Then he drove the car with an OBD scanner plugged in. He immediately noticed major power loss above 6k-7k, like the car was choked off, but nothing abnormal on the scanner. Then he just threw the car on a lift, undid those three fasteners, tilted the cat down, and saw the honeycomb in pieces. Then he documented it so I could have another dealership replace the cat under the federally mandated emissions warranty.

The diagnosis was nothing groundbreaking, really. When I described the symptoms here, some members also figured it was probably a clogged cat. What I liked about Jim at JPR was that he made everything easy, quick, and friendly, and that he obviously knew the car -- all of which was SUPER refreshing after my experience with my local dealership.

Nice.

FWIW, I've met two people who've had JPR install rebuilt engines. One might have had JPR do the rebuild as well; not sure. But both spoke very highly of JPR.

I have used Jim of JPR for many things on my RX8. He is a master rotary tech and wrench that has worked for decades on rotaries , stock, race and drag. He has built these and custom rotary cars from the ground up, including his 1000hp rotary dragster.

A small shop but great rotary wrench. He has always been able to tackle any rotary issue and requests from his stock and modified car customers. He has built about every configuration of rotary engine and car, from two to four rotor, NA and Inducted , and rebuilds them also. He has also hosted local RX8club events at his shop.

Simply one of the best !

Jim always did stellar work on my 40th Anniversary Edition RX8 when I lived in Southern New Jersey. I have moved to Grapevine, Texas, and I miss Jim and JPR. Cheers

I figured I'd chime in and give props to Jim at JPR as well. I still have my 04 running strong 6 years and 70k miles later after the original engine died and my RX8 was resurrected at JPR.
