Very interesting. However if this car ever came to fruition, Hyundai may find itself in a very tricky situation trying to price it. Base Mustang 5.0 starts around 30k. Current 3.8 Genesis coupe is already around 28k and that's with slightly over 300hp. And let's face it...Hyundai will have a tough time attracting people who are already fans of muscle cars such as the Mustang and Camaro.

But this is America, where people are all for the "Bigger equals better" syndrome. If Hyundai puts a V8 in that Genesis with 429 HP , price around 30-35k, you can bet your bottom dollar Americans will flock to it. And Hyundai will cut into Mustang, Camaro, Challenger sales and even sad to say Corvette sales. Anybody looking at a Vette will think twice, a 2010 C6 with 430HP will set you back 55k large ones, without any options or suspension packages.

55k vs 30-35k for same the performance, minus the brand and name recognition associated with the Vette. I hate to say this...<sigh> all I see is WIN with future Hyundai now. This company is making its so hard not to even consider them, there making strides at leaps and bounds in all areas that Mazda, Honda, Toyota, Mistsubishi and Nissan should have been done or should be doing NOW!

^I agree with it in American perspectives for the muscles cars....except the Corvette. The vette is in a class of it's own with the handling that none of those cars below it can touch. It's up with the likes of a Porsche, Ferrari, R8 etc. so I don't think anyone who looks at a vette is considering looking at those lower class while similar hp numbered cars; it's like looking at 2 different types of classes. The vette has performance and handling superiority to top any of those currently.

If someone wants just an overpowered car for straight line then they would look at the Camaro, Mustang, Challenger, etc. If someone wants a performance and track machine not to mention having a collector car they would be looking at the vette.

My next car I'd prefer a Camaro but honestly if I could afford it, I would get the vette. The last few years have looked really good modeling wise not to mention well it always has power.

side note: of all 3 current cars out in that group, the look of the challenger is really growing on me. i wouldn't get any of them, but they've had some cool commercials going and it's 'different' enough from the 'must-ero'

I can't attest to the whole world, but american consumers rely heavily on perception. I'd wager that most consumers looking at cars that start at $55k are not even going to think for a second about hyundai as an option. Anyone who says "I was thinking of getting a vette, but went with the hyundai" was either looking at used vettes or is lying out their ass and can't afford the vette.

I can see it cutting into mustang, camaro or challenger sales, but not the vette.

No matter what, you have to give Hyundai props for the current Genesis Coupe. For their first attempt at a sports coupe they have done really well. It will be interesting to see if they can continue to build on their current momentum.

At the same time, I am becoming increasingly disappointed with Honda, Toyota, and especially Mazda. Honda and Toyota have pretty much completely abandoned any sportiness to their entire lineups. And with Mazda I just share the same frustrations about the next generation rotary that everyone else on here does.

first attempt? they've had the tiburon for years. granted it sucks, but it is a coupe that they tried to say was sporty.

agreed with honda and toyota. i expected it from toyota, but it seems they might remedy it in the coming 2-3 years. honda surprises me...the civic si is a great little car, but they need to revamp the s2000 and bring it back to life, what a great car.

mazda hasn't let us down yet, they're just dragging their heels. the rx8 and the miata and the ms3 is a nice line-up...they just really need to up the anty now w/ the next rx car.

I think most people realized that wasn't the case.... but even if it was close, no one is going to be looking at $55k cars and go for one at half the price.

Woah, a v8 in a hyundai genesis? Didn't think I would see that. I thought most car companies were trying to stay away from the v8's with gas mileage restrictions and all? Don't get me wrong, I love v8's, but I don't think I would look at a Hyundai Genesis when looking at a mustang or camaro, or especially if I was looking at corvettes.

I agree 100% about dragging their heels. All I can say is for as long as this next rotary is taking, Mazda sure as hell better get it right this time. Part of me worries that because it is taking so long, by the time the new car comes out, it will already be way behind the competition in terms of performance. I just wish we knew exactly what Mazda was shooting for with this next rotary. Are they trying to get back on par with the Z? Porsche? What?

that's true. either one would work too, just put the ms3/old ms6 engine in there!!

6 coupe would be on par with accord/altima coupe

3 coupe would be on par with civic coupe, etc.

Imports have never, been on par with a Porsche; that's an entirely higher class of cars. Handling sure, such as the 8 which is up there with a Porsche, but overall performance and handling of a car entirely, no.

Imports always face off their sports cars against one another; Z, Rx's, Evo's, STI's, Supra, etc, etc over the years. Comparing them to a muscle car is like apple to oranges. Comparing them to a higher class performance car such as a Porsche, Ferrari, R8, Corvette, etc is the same thing. Entirely different classes.

The Mustang, Camaro, Challenger, Charger...all ugly as shit. Finally the USA will have an affordable V8 powered sports car other than the Corvette that looks good and you would actually want to buy.

That's subjective taste. I love the Camaro's look while wishing the interior was better. The Hyundai looks boring as the current one. If they were gonna put a v8 in it at least step up the looks. IMO, any of those 3 muscle cars show more style than that Hyundai....

Sad to bust your bubble but the 90's era Z car was in driect competition with the Porsche 911, Ferrari 348 and the Corvette, and it spanked all of them in the early '90's. Nissan was out to prove a point that there Twin Turbo Z car was a world class fighter. And they did succesfully the first two years it debut.

That Z car was the reason why Ferrari went back to the drawing board and brought out the 355, Porsche went back and came out with the C4 TT 911 , GM upped the HP from 275 to a solid 300HP in there C4 models.

Also earlier Z models such as the 240Z,260Z, 280Z were in direct competion with Jaguar, Porsche,GM.


ZOOM 44:
No reason why Hyundai just has to stop at the engine for performance,they already have a HKS version that is track tuned to run with the big boys in its current form, major overhaul to all the suspension bits,chassis tweaks etc. That being said they could make there Genesis run with , if not beat a stock C6.


Also people need to stop thinking that people can't cross shop because of price. Before I got the 8 I was cross shopping a 32k RX-8 vs a 48k used M3 , the only reason why I didn't get the M3 was due to the guy not coming down on the price of the M3. I could have paid for the 48k M3 , but I was not going to pay for a car that was only worth 43k at the time. Instead of the M3 maybe I should have been cross shopping 350Z,Evo's or WRX, not. As a enthusiast i could care less about price class. If I want it ,if the car moves my soul and heart , I will get it.

^^^ Yes the NSX made people think if Acura could build a reliable super car, why couldn't Lamborghini, Ferrari and Porsche build reliable sports cars/super cars. They were forced to change , forced to not only build a product that can go fast, but build a product that can last too.

But back on topic, Hyundai is in a position where Nissan , Toyota, Honda , Mazda , Mistubishi was in the '90's. They have to oppurtunity to build a world class sports car to go against the world. GM did it with the Vette in the latter of this decade with the Z-06 and ZR-1, so now the world is waiting to see what Hyundai does.

I am not a fan of Hyundai , but i want to to see them do it, maybe it will get the Japanese to be passionate about sports cars again like they were in the '90's. God what a great era for Japanese sports cars! Everybody brought there "A" game and the world took notice!
