Will Ford downsizing affect RX-8?

The fact that Ford is laying off 30,000 people and cutting back won't affect whether the 8 stays in production, will it? I mean one thing really has nothing to do with the other, right? Tell me I'm just being paranoid.

the cutback is specifically for the Ford NORTH AMERICAN operations, it's not an across-the-board cut of ALL Ford Motor Company and its affiliates

so I highly doubt this'll affect Mazda, and in turn the RX-8, one single bit.

Why is it paranoid? Downsizing usually comes with other cuts - R&D, Advertising, Staffing, Etc. Anyone remember when AMC was downsizing? Didn't do much innovating back then did they - any of their divisions, brands, etc.

That said... probably won't have much impact

MNAO has had Record Sales earnings as of late.
This will not affect Mazda OR the RX-8.

Cos its FORD that is downsizing not Mazda!!!

Contrary to what you might know the world does not revolve around America. Mazda sells cars all over the world and Ford are considered crappy in most parts of the world. Ford is downsizing its American plants in St. Louis/Atlanta and even though they own a part of Mazda they don't own the Mazda plants in Hiroshima and don't take buisness decsions for Mazda (and thank god for that!)

The only thing that will affect the 8 staying in production is how successful the 8 is IMO. This could be a make or break year, if sales decline from last year MY06 might just be the end since the RX-8 should be due for some changes.

Cool. I thought the idea was pretty far-fetched myself - just wanted to bounce the idea off you guys to see if I was crazy.
I hope the 8 goes on for several years - I hope to buy one (or possibly the new GTI, but probably not) in the spring.

If they don't hurry up and get the car here they will have lower sales. However, I am sure they will have less production of them to compensate for that anyway. I am impatiently waiting for my car still. This Friday was the "early date" they told me to expect my car, and of course, the guy at the dealership that I have to go through is "away from his desk" again, still, ALWAYS, so I don't have an update on my schedule.

Umm the RX-8's are already in showrooms in case you havent noticed. The 06's aren't that different from the 05's in showrooms. In fact you'd be hardpressed to find any differences in the manual.

Yeah I too am waiting to see when you get your car BunnyGirl.

I haven't been out at any dealerships to see recently. I know I called four in my area Friday and two of them said they are expecting to get one to two in the next few weeks or so, which would fit into my date range I was given of January 27 through February 17.

Your area might have them already, though. I know nobody here is advertising them yet. However, I was told by MNAO they were coming out to coincide with our autoshow which starts Thursday, so maybe they will be here this weekend. I'll have to wait and see. My boyfriend is supposed to take me to the autoshow Sunday for my birthday since that is what I wanted to do. Potentially somebody there knows more.

I checked inventory for around your Seattle area and they don't show any 06's there yet within a 150 mile radius, same with several other major cities on the West Coast and elsewhere, so I don't think they made it out yet. Probably close but not here yet.

Mazda recorded a $250 miliion profit last year. Ford lost nearly a billion. Forget the fact that they are somewhat tied together. The individual lines are what counts. Sales of the RX-8 aren't poor by any stretch of the imagination. Not even close. There are lots that are too blind to this and like to think they don't sell though. Since they do sell quite well, it's obvious the car doesn't need more power to keep selling. Again this is a crybaby thing from people that shouldn't have bought the car in the first place if it wasn't everything they wanted in it. Mazda is not going to build a current car that doesn't make them money. That's how they've been growing. Go back 5 years and see how much trouble Mazda was in. Ford had to bail them out and now the tables are almost reversed. The RX-8 isn't the money maker that some of the other cars are. It's not the flagship car either, sorry to disappoint some. That title belongs to the 6. It's a specialty car that helps Mazda's image. It may not be a cash cow but it is profitable. Ford isn't going to change that. Why would Ford cut a profitable car line that they have money invested in? Cut the lines that don't do well which they are.

That was exactly what I thought to start with so what exactly was the point of your post?

I thought I missed something so I went through the trouble of looking and came up with the same info I had before on inventory. NOTHING.

As of October last year the 06's weren't even scheduled to arrive in the U.S. until sometime in February at the earliest. This has been told here several times before. It's no surprise we don't see any yet. It's still January.

Not at dealerships yet for sale. Not sure about at port or otherwise.

I don't know what he's talking about being in showrooms already.

"Gee, they're in the showrooms already....can't tell the difference.....none here in the U.S."

We are all aware that they are being sold elswhere, which is what none of us were asking before.

I suppose the whole point is to have a laugh at our expense when we actually waste our time checking.
