In what car did you learn how to drive an automatic transmission?
In all fairness to the people who have automatic cars or RX-8's, I posted this thread so that they could share their "experiences" as well.
Also nothing special again, I first learned to drive on a 2001 Chevy Cavalier. Man I remember that thing used to be so awesome, with the sub's and stuff.:lol2: |
i first learned to drive automatic on a burgandy 1986 volvo 240DL stationwagon.
that car the best turning radius of any car i've ever driven. |
2005 toyota tundra......
Mitsubishi Mirage
I have a MT car, but I learned to drive an automatic in a 1967 Buick LeSaber (410 c.i.).
learned to drive automatic? there is no learning...you get in, look at the markings on the shifter and you know....its far from rocket science. the first car i drove that was automatic was my parents 1998 toyota camry. i hated it. i was so used to manual...it was boring(even compared to my 3 cylinder geo metro that was manual) and i found my left foot was tensed up the entire drive pushing against the dead pedal with all its might. haha.

1975 Ford Maverick back in 1984
A 1999 Honda Civic.
There is more to driving a car than just shifting. This will not turn into a automatic transmission (and the people who drive them) bash. I have deleted one post because of that.
I learned to drive on manuals, the only auto I've owned was a '97 Protege. I can't say there was any learning involved, I just put it in drive and hit the gas.
2002 pontiac grand prix.
2001 Jeep Liberty Limited, offroading ftw.
1993 Mazda MPV.
I learned in a 1990 infinity q45
1990 Mercury Topaz. First and last piston powered car I've owned.
1978 Jeep J10 Honcho. It could hardly move...

1971 Datsun 510 sedan, it was a pea green soup kind of color and slow as dirt. With the A/C on it was faster to walk, but it was my first car.
See a trend here for me? |
First automatic car I learned to drive was my parents Olds Nintey-Eight Regency. It was a nice car. MY first automatic car was a 1979 Camaro.
A 2001 Audi A4
I think it was the 1969 Chrysler?
Lexus ES 350

1989 thunderbird, my dad's old car. it was a frikkin boat but i was so excited about driving, i didnt care what the car was.
I remember going into brand new (unpaved, unbuilt) neighborhoods with my dad's old cars and rumbling around since there was nothing to hit. That's how I learned to drive an automatic. Those were the days.

His A/C never worked and sounded worse than FART CANS on the 20+horsepower Civic's... Now he has a 1999 Green OLDS alero. That thing is awesome for acceleration  |
I learned on a few cars.
Originally a '89 Mitsubishi Galant and an '89 Cadillac Deville sedan. A little after I got my license...on one particular day a friend from school took me out in her Chevy Chevette and taught me the basics to driving manual. I honed my manual driving ability a little more in mexico on a rental VW Golf. Then I purchased an '88 RX-7 and finished the job. |
First manual I ever drove was a 76 triump tr6, but that didn't go so hot. I really learned on my 88 Jetta.
EDIT: haha oops, I didn't realize we had a copycat automatic thread. As for the autos, I think it was a dodge caravan, I don't remember |
The car I learned how to drive on was a manual 87' 200SX. The first automatic car I ever drove however was a 91' fastback 240 which was the reason I ended up purchasing my own manual fastback 240 later. MAN I miss that car........ kinda haha

I think with exception of a rental car or two I have always driven stick up until the service. Then it was the LMTV and HMMV that I learned how to drive auto.

Uh... this is the AUTOMATIC thread... Go make a MANUAL thread so you could talk about your "experiences" with those terrible choices of transmissions.... |

Dont remember the first car, the earliest I remember was a Volvo S80. Thats like 10 years after I learned to drive MT.
1990 240sx....throw that shat in neutral, rev it up, throw it into drive and make the back tires peel out
'86 Chevrolet Celebrity Eurosport - first car inherited from my parents - 4sp auto w/ like a 2.8 V6 I think - the tranny was a piece and this is what probably drove me to a permanent state of manual transmissions
These were the cars I learned to drive on at age 13-15, they are all family owned and I was taught in random parking lots
Brothers - 97 Lexus ES Auto Brothers - 87 Corvette Auto Other Brothers - 02 Corvette Z06 Manual Brothers 03 350Z Manual Then my Drivers Ed Camry Auto Then I briefly owned a 350Z manual which I traded for: A jeep Liberty which I owned for a year Auto then traded for: Drumroll My RX8. Im a fairly young driver so its easy for me to put down all my history  As you can see I learned to drive an MT early. |

Did you even read what I wrote? I put what I learned to drive auto in... |
I can't remember that far back,,,, :uhh:
Had to be a 1972 Ford LTD. Nice. |

Woops... I read it again and you were right, I read your post a bit too fast. NEUTRAL DROP FTW! on a mazda 6 v6. I peeled out first and bouncing off the redline for ages. Good times. |

2000 nissan maxima..still have it and love driving it!
A 1970 Olds Vista Cruiser wagon. Believe it or not this was the Driver's Training class vehicle for my learner's permit. Learn to parallel park in that and you can park anything!
Unless you count my dad's riding lawnmower, I learned to drive in my mom's '71 Toyota Corona Deluxe. And yes, it did come with an under-dash 8-track player!
Hmm. Probably a 1970 Chevy Impala.
Never really got the hang of it, though. Even today, I aimlessly stomp my left foot ineffectively at the floor as I come to a stop in a rental. Its quite unnerving. |
i dunno, i never owned or drove an auto for any kind extended time... i guess the few times i have drivin them it just seemed natural and simpler after driving MT?
Mine was a 65 Mustang, 289 v8, auto, a/c, pony interior. I soent 1.5 years restoring it and then my dad sold 2 weeks before I turned 16. I was so pissed, but I moved on to better things
When I was 16, I first past the written test. My mom took me out in a parking lot in our 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser, to get myself used to turning, accelerating and braking before my 6 hours. Then I drove in the driving school's Mazda Protege. After my 6 hours, I drove either my Dad's 2000 Lexus RX300 or my Mom's 2006? RX350
