It wasn't an RX8. So WTF was it?

Today I glanced over and caught a quick look at what I thought was a velocity red RX8 in another lane ahead of me. Had those distinctive front fenders with a vent right behind them. I thought "Cool, the first RX8 I've seen while driving mine," and I almost waved. But when I passed, I saw the headlights were triangular, a lot like a Celica. Huh? Is there a body kit that gives a Celica the look of an RX8? And if so, why not just buy the 8?

Crossfire, s2000, or Pacer X.

Can't provide any info, just another question. About two months or so before I bought my RX-8 (November 2004), and before I was seriously considering buying one, I was following a car on the Freeway that I thought was an RX-8. I noticed, however, that it had a rear window wiper, one of those LOOONG wipers attached to the left rear corner of the window.

Looked awful, imo, and I wondered at the time how I had missed the existence of the rear window wiper in pictures of the car. Later, when I looked at the RX-8 seriously, I noticed no such wiper exists and as far as I can tell, no aftermarket versions are available.

I've wondered since whether someone had fabricated a wiper (for what reaon I can't imagine) or whether it was simply another car. Any ideas?

Hyundai Tiburons have a rear wiper attached near the left and they look a bit like the RX8.

I know and love the looks of a Crossfire, and it was definitely not it. Crossfires have a spoiler that raises, and it doesn't go the width of the trunk. But the car I saw had a fixed spoiler, the width of the car -- very much like the Celica. And the headlights were just like a Celica's.

Definitely not an s2000.

Pacer X? This car didn't have vintage plates!

The Scion tc does kind of look like the '8 with premenstrual bloat, but that wasn't it, either. Headlights on the tc are a bit similar to the '8, but the car I saw had healights like a Celica. The tc doesn't have a vent behind the front wheel.

Unless I was absolutely imagining those front fenders and vents, I really do think I saw a Celica with an RX8 body kit.

The Tiburon isn't a bad looking car for the low price but to compare it to our 8?? no way!

Not a Tibby. About three or four years ago, the low price on the Tiburons got me thinking about a sporty car. So I looked at them several times and read up a lot and noticed them whenever one drove by. So I recognize them right off.

Then I saw what I could get in an RX8 and it was no contest.

Hyundai has risen to fame of late with improved reliability. But what they have been real experts in is stealing designs off other cars and models. There have been many times where I've confused the newer model sonatas with jaguars.... specially the rear end. Thus it does not surprise me that the Tiburon is made to look like the 8.

Sonata looking like a Jag from the rear, absolutely. The Tiburon was out a few year before the 8 even hit the car shows.

Hey, I'm not saying that they look the same. I don't know what the '05 Tib looks like, but I was just stating that with Hyundais you just never know.

I should have qualified that with "just a wee, teensy, little itty bitty bit like the '8." (I opted for the lion over the house cat. I'm allergic to dander anyway.)

But it looks like the newer Tiburons have added fake vents behind the front wheels. Almost like ... a certain car I know.

Don't get me wrong, the Tiburon os a nice car, but its a "sporty car" and not a "sports car". I like the Tiburon actually. Also my wife drive a Santa Fe which I can not beleive how relaible and comfortable it is and 37K. Not one problem at all. I'd buy another in a flash. Just don't plan on going off-roading with it; its not that good!

I love the look of the tiburon, it is about time a cheap car has good sheet metal. Where did this rule that cheap cars have to look like **** come from. I think it was penned by pinnifirana if I recall correctly. It looks an awful lot like a ferrari 456 to me.

It's a long shot, but could have been the SC 430.

That sure is a nice-looking Lexus, and certainly on the right track, but not the car I saw. This had a raised spoiler, and the headlights are different.
