Thumbs down turbo install gone bad.. need help (non rotary)

This past week we installed a turbo onto a buddies 2001 s2k and when done it turned on and ran what sounded to me like good. but when we went to take it for a test drive the car died at idle and it was hard for the engine to turn over. so we took off the differential i believe and the car ran a little better but it still did the same thing as before. the next morning we took the car for a test drive and it ran good but it still sometimes died at idle, after 10 min of cruising (not driving crazy, smooth driving) my friend took the car up to 5k rpm in 2nd and all the sudden we hear a pop and the engine dies while driving and wouldn't start. forgot to say that we were running low boost to no boost, tops 3 psi. towed it back to the house and took off the fmu because we thought that it was giving too much fuel, not start. took out the plugs they were all wet, so we cleaned them and let them dry, put them in no start. friend bought some new ngk performance plugs... no start. the engine is turning but it wont start. any ideas of what could be the prob

PS. sorry for posting a s2k prob on rx8 forum but we need some help haha thanks!

here is the s2k thread that will give more info and has a vid at the end which may give more infor on the prob.

Better description of the pop? What's the situation on tuning?

Not to sound like an *******, but it sounds like this wasn't exactly well planned based on the posts in the thread. It might help if you post (basically) what all was done during the install. It might give people an indication of a missed step or mistake during the install that could have caused a problem. Had the health of the engine been looked at before the build?

Check for compression, fuel and spark...

Compression first or you may be wasting your time.

I'd check the piping couplers. Probably popped one loose when boosting and now your getting unmetered air. Very common problom when first installing a turbo is you forget a to tighten a clamp. i wouldn't worry. Honda's are tough. lol

metal + plug aimed at plug metal is all I've always done. Maybe he thought you had to test it like those big ol' batteries. Stick your tongue to it!!

never mind about renting the diagnostic tool for the spark... i mean a compression tester. but all the spark plugs are sparking. and my friend just found that the coupler right off the turbo fell off which was the pop we heard, we put it on right and tight, but still nothing.. lol and also meant to say missing link instead of differential.. sorry lol

I use a timing light to check for spark on each plug lead; a timing advance light is nice for this too...
Compression tester. (with the valve in for pistons. LOL)

I boosted my nissan spec v a while back and when i first had it i had problems with it dieing at idle. Are you running a blow-through maf setup? My problem had to do with the bov leaking at idle/decel and causing incorrect maf readings.

Is this most likely related to the install or just a coincidence?

i think due to install? i dont know what he did exactly because i was there for only half of the install, but i think some crap went into his intake sys, and when we took it for a drive, it got in there and seized the crankshaft.. lol

hmm. okay so we put the cam back together and still nothing but thos time it does sound like it wants to sound... but i have a question. if the we are cranking the engine, is there supposed to be something shooting out of the exhaust. and what i mean by shooting, is there supposed to be smoke, gas or anything coming out of the exhaust, because there is nothing in our situation. when my friend cranks the car the exhaust is not throwing any smoke out or anything its as if the exhaust was disconnected.

Typically, you wont see anything in an exhaust. Don't touch the tip obviously, but see if you can feel moving air from it or put something light that would easily be blown if there was exhaust flow by the tip.

I was thinking about when it's running... forgot it's not starting at all lol. I'd imagine nothing would come out unless you have ignition.
