Trade the RX-8 for the next Miata?

Check it out. Scroll through the pages. I'm as giddy as a little girl. Yummy, I say.

I have had three Miatas, one RX-7 (first gen) and now my RX-8, plus an MX-6 LS and an RX-2 (my dad's) in my life. I guess I'm just a Mazda kind of guy. I sold my last Miata (turbo'ed yellow) a few months ago, and ... I miss it. I do love the RX-8 but I'm still missing having a convertible, and a car that I could drive near the limits without committing myriad felonies in the process.

Of course, I'd not actually make the switch until (1) I had checked out the new car personally when it hits the showrooms this spring, as well as its competition; and (2) I'd waited another year or two to enjoy my still "new" RX-8, exploit its depreciation, and let the new Miata prices drop a bit.

But maybe, in a year or two ....

See http://www.thecarconnection.com/inde...&sid=184&n=157 for some nifty details.

The 2006 Miata gets a new 2.0-liter in-line four engine (a second, 1.8-liter powerplant will be offered in fuel-conscious Europe). It features double-overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder, electronic port fuel injection and variable intake valve timing. While U.S. specs have yet to be released, the larger engine in European trim delivers 158 hp and 139 lb-ft of torque.

It is nice. I'm not crazy about the layout of the radio/cruise control buttons on the steering wheel but it is nice.....very tempting.

Wow that miata is ugly IMO. The recent miata body style looked a lot better, that thing just looks too "cute" for my taste. The RX8 was close enough for me to the new "rounded" look that seems to becoming the new fad.

Also, what is with Mazda and making all their cars with altezzas now?

I prefer regular tail lights, too. But I think this one looks way better than the second gen (NB) Miata, which was too bland for my taste. (Although the Mazdaspeed Miata is pretty nice-looking.)

All the "sneak" concept pics I've seen look way better than the final result...I'm not very impressed.

Yah I was looking at the mazdaspeed Miata yesterday when I was at the dealership finalizing things for my rx8. Looked very good IMO, very well done. Though it had the worlds smallest front mounted intercooler, it looked funny :D

I definitely like the current mazdaspeed version over the new one you've posted, but thats me.

Some of you guys are harsh! :D

The MSM Miata intercooler is teeny. I think Flyin Miata is working on an upgrade for it. I'd want a nice vent-to-atmosphere BOV, too, for the lovely whooshing sound.

Here's the (larger) FM IC versus the MSM IC.

go for it. the miata is more of a sports car than the 8 ever will be plus miatas have a ton of aftermarket support.

I prefer the M1 or M2 to this one. I'm gonna drop a rotary into a miata soon anyway... best of both worlds.

I'd wait to see how the Solstice and Sky turn out before making any kind of move. If they turbo or supercharge one of those (rumored) then I really see little reason to have a miata unless the Solstice and Sky end up weighing a lot like some are speculating.

The Solstice and Sky have already been said to weigh in the 2850lbs range. They have a heavy chassis as it is modular and intended for more than just a roadster. Same issue the Z has. What speculation?

The Miata should come in around 50lbs heavier than the current one which puts it around the 2450 range. This is a 400lbs difference. I would rather go with less weight as it is easy to add power. I like the way Mazda tunes their suspension as well. Think of it as a 8 with 500lbs less and that is what it will probably feel like.

Wow, the pics from Autoweek's Geneva Motor Show website look really good! I'm starting to like this Miata more and more each time I see it. Wouldn't dream of trading the RX-8 for it, but I certainly wouldn't mind it along side the 8.

What IkeWRX said...let's see what those 3 cars (Miata, Pontiac, Saturn) look like in their final form and how they perform. Last time I checked 2850 pounds does not equal a heavy car, but if the Miata is 400lbs less then I understand the point.

Anyway, it's cute but I think the Saturn & Pontiac will be better looking and with a SC or Turbo they will be real fast too. BUT, if you love it...then that's all that matters!

i think its pretty nice, almost a squished z8, front end could grow on me. still love the 8 though. to me, i'd start thinking more along the lines of "is it practical for me to have an 8 AND a Miata" as opposed to "is it practical for me to trade in my 8".
i wouldn't give up the renesis personally no matter how much I like the miata. As for the solstice and sky? 2 words: a Pontiac and a Saturn.

I agree. We'll see just how well these cars compete with the new Miata. I personally love the looks of both of them. It is all speculation at this point until these cars are released and compared. I prefer the looks of the Sky and Solstice more then Miata, but we'll see how they compare in other aspects. I am looking to trade in my RX8 in a couple years for a convertible or roadster. My fingers are crossed that Mazda will eventually make an RX8 convertible, but it just might not happen. However, I'm preparing myself to take a HUGE hit if I do trade this RX8 in, because it's simply not holding it's value as was expected. We shall see!!
