Toyota S-FR previewed

Just caught wind of Toyota S-FR concept being previewed on my twitter feed.

Toyota S-FR Concept Official Preview!!

I'm not a fan of the styling but I'm glad to see a direct Miata competitor.

Wouldn't surprise me. 4 lugs and similar size. 1.5L with ~130HP (as per Jalopnik) seems awfully familiar since the 1.5L ND Miata has 128HP.

Leave it to Toyota to copy and paste in an uglier form just like the Scion copy of the Mazda2.

Yes, it will have the ND's chassis under there. Mazda and Toyota partnered a bit back, Toyota gets Mazda's chassis based stuff and Mazda gets Toyota's hybrid tech. I'm sure the details are more involved but The Scion / 2 chassis share is one sign, another is prior talk about Toyota working with Mazda on the next sports car ... of which I guess this is it.

I'm not feeling inclined to go hunt down the articles for each of these points, but they are out there.

Just my opinion...nope.

see brakes caliper position...especially at rear are different in the 2 cars.

this means different suspensions, and different cars.

the results of the agreement between Mazda and Toyota are planned after 2020 IMHO. after the 3-years product plan that Mazda had showed this spring.

It can have the ND chassis with different hubs, control arms, springs, shocks, mounting points, etc... The tub is what I was referring to.

I like Toyota, but this looks uhm... let's be nice and go with uninspired. I can't imagine that a group of executives, engineers and designers looked at this and said "Yes. This is the best we can do in this format".

I sort of like it - reminds me of the Opel GT and the Miata combined.

Well, if it is built off of the ND platform, good on Mazda for now having two car companies offer the MX-5 platform in competing cars.

That brings me a question:

How much extra production capacity is there in the factory that builds the MX-5?
I thought that facility was already running full steam ahead?

What happens to production capacity of Mazda vehicles if the Fiata and the ugly *** Toyota thing actually outsell the MX-5 in the market? Will Mazda slow down production of the MX-5 and other Mazda vehicles in order to increase production of these 2 competing cars instead?

BC.
