Toyota Camry XLE, Faster than RX8?

http://www.caranddriver.com/features...camry-v-6.html
0-60 5.8
Standing ¼-mile: 14.3 sec @ 99 mph

All I gotta say is wow, from a family sedan I am pretty impressed. It has all the luxury features you can want AND its fast! I am startled to look into the future, 2009 Camrys that go 0-60 in like 5.4..

Of course this is all useless when on a track with actual turns and such, but on paper Camrys rule!

Smoke Honda 03-04-2007 05:48 PM

Why the hell did you have to go and tell everyone that? Now we'll have to ban you lol.

rglbegl 03-04-2007 05:54 PM

WOW!!! A thread talking about "place car name here" is faster than the 8.
Never seen one of these before :banghead:

All that really means is Toyota has finally caught up to Honda and Nissan. The Altima and Accord V6 (MT versions) have been capable of those time for a while.

LOL, speed isn't everything. This is the first time I've ever seen anyone excited about a Camry... :nono:

j_tso 03-04-2007 09:07 PM

Wow! Now dumbasses can go from 0-40 on the highway even faster!

Razz1 03-04-2007 09:11 PM

ah.. but the real question is how fast can it go from a rolling start? Or how fast can it accelerate at 40 mph 50mph 60mph?

CarAndDriver 03-05-2007 12:33 AM

Family cars get faster and faster with more HP and decent traction control systems. Now can they finally go fast in the fast lane instead of impeding traffic in it.

Most people drive these things like there is a 4 cylinder in it. I guess the HP and 0-60 are there to boost their child seat in the rear egos.

snizzle 03-05-2007 07:13 AM

There is no car faster than the RX8, but whatever :)

Differential anyone ? watch the wheel spins like crazy.

Toyota finally has something to counter other companies, like Ike said, damn, even my brother's SE-R can pump 260+ HP from what 2 yrs ago ? what did Toyota had that time?

rodrigo67 03-05-2007 08:32 AM

You guys are missing the real question.

With the accord, camry, altima, and many others pumping out more power then the 8, when is Mazda going to give some attention to it's flagship sports car.

When the average people mover is moving faster then mazda's top sports car, it's time for Mazda to start keeping up with the competition. I mean, all the cars that we first compared the 8 too when it first came out are all leaving the 8 further and further back.

This is not about the camry passing the 8 in the power department, it's about mazda's inability to keep up with the competition...

Nothing like another magazine race to start out the week. Go car on page 12!

Since when is the RX-8 their flagship sportscar.. everyone knows, mazda's flagship is the CX-7 (yes, CX), followed by the MX-5, followed by it's mazdaspeed lines, finally followed by the MPV and THEN the RX-8.

Mazda is doing fine competition wise, and I don't consider the 8 its "flagship" sports car, if there ever was a flagship it would be the FD (which is no longer made) or the Miata, calling the 8 a flagship is like saying the 350z is Nissan's flagship, both cars are way too new to wear that title. (my opinion anyway :) )

Chrisbert 03-05-2007 10:46 AM

I think my Wife's Acura RDX is quicker 0-60 than my 8.

snizzle 03-05-2007 10:53 AM

I think my 16 yr old little brother can outrun my car while i'm driving it. It's a drivers race though and I have to run premium to have a chance.

Jedi54 03-05-2007 10:57 AM

of course it's FASTER, it's got Waaaaay more CYLINDERS then us! duh... :fruit:

C&D 7.5, Edmunds 6.8 for the RDX. You must drive an AT 8, cuz a 6M will be at an RDX.

playdoh43 03-05-2007 11:07 AM

similar to the s2000, due to the lack of torque and power down low, rx8 needs a clutch burning high rpm clutch drop in order to get a good time in the 0-60 and 1/4 mile. its very hard to execute, without it, you can easily add another .5+ second to the 0-60 time....

sooner or later even the likes of 350Z will be slower than the grocery getters. its just a natural process of cars getting faster and more fuel efficient...

Yup. Just look at the Z's VQ. 10 years ago, you'd have been laughed off the block for suggesting a factory, naturally aspirated V6 producing 300HP. Unfortunately the rotary will be left behind (NA at least).

MikeW 03-05-2007 05:05 PM

10 years ago the german would have laughed at only 300hp, the M3 made 316.5hp
15 years ago the M3 made 282hp from a 3.0 inline6

1stgen8 03-05-2007 06:00 PM

My wife's V6 Accord feels like it might be faster off the line than my 8.

A 1997 M3 by my sources produced 240hp @ 6000rpm with 236lb-ft @ 3800rpm. BMW didn't break 300 until the E46. It looks like the old M5's were pushing 300, with an I6. BMW has always been the exception when it comes to building engines. They make some of the best out there.

I said V6 anyway :)

opus_opus 03-05-2007 10:02 PM

This is sad, when a mid-priced family sedan can out accelerate a more expensive sports car.

Doesn't matter, the Camry probably can't turn for shit. Muchless, keep up on a track. Who cares for 0-60 anyways? I don't.
