That is undoubtedly the least knowledgeable automotive journalist I have ever read. I loved the "firewall diameter thickness" liner. I don't doubt he failed the high school physics class he mentioned. I'm also thinking he failed any and all English classes.

Some very simple things one can do on the RX-8, while still keeping the car practical for every day use:

1) Buy the lighter model to begin with. (i.e. base or sport package)

2) Remove the tool kit/jack. (who needs it if you don't have a spare in the RX-8 anyway?)

3) Don't carry any additional junk in your car, keep the pockets, glove box & trunk empty etc.

4) Take off the engine cover

5) Replace the stock car mats with lighter ones. (The rubber backing is heavy)

6) Keep show but no go items off of the car

7) Keep the gast tank at 1/2 full or less

8) Go on a diet and lose some weight! (20lbs would do the average American some good and the car will be lighter when you're driving as well.)

Hey every little bit counts. And it depends on the kind of junk one might carry. Some folks leave all kinds of stuff in their cars, that can easily add up to 10-20 lbs or more.

Another possible weight saver is an engine block made up of magnesium its lighter than aluminum about 75% i think. Probably be good on gas consumption but dont know if it could stand up to the heat produced in an engine.

I read an article a while ago about carbon fibre engine blocks. Don't know if they have made any succesfully, but they likely will

Ever played with fire and a Magnesium strip? Burns pretty bright light and then it's all smokey...

That only happens in powder form.
Although, I suppose powder could be created from engine wear

And here is some info i found on the web about magnesium engine block there this organization thats doing some research on the matter. Main advantages magnesium has over aluminum is that its lighter check it out.
