Test Drive: Mazda Miata MX-5

Ok, during lunch I test drove a new miata fully loaded, and it was sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ooooo fun!

I couldn't help but smile the whole time. And I"m one of those 'I'm a tough customer, I'm gonna put you through the ringer...I am a sports car enthusiast and I have expectations..." But I couldn't but help but smile, and show I liked it.

Granted I probably could handle corners just as fast in my 8, if not faster, and I could definitley feel the power difference, but it was still fun. It was like driving a suped up go-kart with high-class quality, and Ferrari Leather. (Not that I know what Ferrari Leather is really like)

Anyway, it was just for fun, but I was impressed indeed.

I TRULY believe the Miata is a DRIVERS CAR! And no longer in mind is the Miata a 'chick car/old retired dude car"

I just wanted to say...go to your local mazda dealership now to get your free test drive!

Gee mate you have only just found that out?

Yes, the MX-5 IS A DRIVERS CAR, those who say its just chicks car have either never driven one or can not drive.......or are too fat.

Thats exactly what they do for me, you just can not stop smiling...it is a GOT TO HAVE CAR.

And it is also not about POWER (HP), again that view for more is based on ignorance.

Again why the MX-5 IS the World Best Selling Sports Car and is the most reliably by a country mile...

Glad you went out and put the stereotypes aside to try one out. I love my MX-5, and although I miss the 8 at times, I will probably never go back.

for the money ~$22K, the Miata is the most fun you can have with a car.....period. Its the only convertible I would ever consider owning.

The one I drove stickered at 27k...so..a little on the expensive side for me, but I'd probably do it if it came to it.

I always believed thery were very agile cars, but I never really realized it till I drove it. I don't think anybody can really unless they test drive one. But yeah, I think that beat out the mini copper s I thought was a fun car to test.

I would SO buy an MX-5 over a 350z or WRX. I'm not sure about a STI/EVO since I've never driven either. I haven't driven an s2000 either but it seems it would be close. I definitley would buy the miata ove a mustang, gto, dodge anything(-viper)

The Miata is a great vehicle. I test drove one last year, and nearly pulled the trigger. I just don't like the new look, but the car was fun. Not as much fun as my S2000, but I did have to pay a lot more for the extra fun and "drivers" experience. No regrets here, but you cannot go wrong with the Miata. It's a super value. I went with a better, more expensive car, but I always hold the Miata in very high regard. I just wish it had the oomph of the S2000, and the looks. Everything else I love.

You can't go wrong with one of the world's most widely-raced vehicles.

Most fun cars I've driven (~50K CND or less)
1) S2000
2) New MX-5 Miata
3) RX8

Test drove the new MX5 last year but didn't get to REALLY enjoy it. The dealer rode along--a big guy named Guido, beleive it or not. He was about a deuce and a quarter.

Went through a residential area and for every turn there was a stop sign.

I test drove a few including the rare SE model (which I liked the most). It was a fun car just like the NA or NB models but has more power. It even looked more upscale from the ourside. But somehow I never liked the overly plasticky interior. That's the trade off I suppose to maintain lightness. In the end, I didn't feel I am a convertible person. Also the RX-8 felt more special and it's hard to beat the experience of maintaining a controlled cornering while the engine is screaming at 9000rpm!

I still prefer the RX-7ish body style of the 2nd gen Miata. The last Mazdaspeed Miata (NB) is a great bang for the buck. Many owners report adding simple air intake and exhaust mods yield about ~200 hp to the wheels. That in a car that weighs 500 lbs less than our RX-8.

Mazda overquoted the NB's hp. I doubt adding I/E will add anymore than just sound power. I think you may be refering to the MSM Miata.

He was refering to the MSM in his post.

As for the NC, bolt-ons do get you to around 200 at the crank according to the MX-5 cup guys

I used to own an NA. Really a great car and I still miss it, despite owning the RX-8.

People who haven't driven one don't really know what they are all about.

FUN, FUN,FUN.....what a blast to drive! Its like the Mini, not fun on strait roads, but get those cars on some bends and you will have a ear to ear smile!

Anybody that says that car is a chick car is very ignorant and probaly has no appreciation for enthusiast cars.

So your saying that if you could afford a Viper without putting any financial strain on yourself you would take the Miata over the Viper? I find that hard to beleive, the Miata is great sports car but it's no comparison to a Viper.

Never driven a Viper, but I suspect a Miata is a lot more fun on the streets than most anything out there including a Viper, where you're stuck to only a fraction of its potential on the streets.

Part of Miata's fun is its maneuverability at low speeds. Think propeller acrobatic planes versus fighter jets. My feeling is that acrobatic planes are more fun/enjoyable to pilot than jets. Adrenaline rush is another thing.
