Mazda specifically said they weren't affected. Only Toyota, Honda and Nissan. So somebody is spouting out wrong information here.

Hornbm, the article says Mazda hasn't found any substandard steel YET, but is still searching its inventory. So there may have been substandard steel supplied and used in the past ,but Mazda just hasn't found it yet. This has apparently been going on for years and covered up by Kobe, so who knows how many cars, aircraft etc. were affected.

 

It isn't just steel. Kobe Steel also fudged the data on their aluminum and copper products, as well.

 

Yes you are right NotAPreppie. Cars are bad enough with substandard below-strength metal, but can you imagine flying in an aluminum aircraft with sub-strength metal. Boeing and others were possibly supplied with this sub-strength metal. Not good at all.

If any structural failures and/or accidents can be tied to this sub-strength Kobe metal, watch out for the lawsuits, fines and/or criminal charges.

 

So, if Mazda did use sub-par materials what does that mean for the customers /car owners?

I mean Mazda puts out sub par engines, so sub par steel would be par for the course,

 

I'm not sure the steel was "bad", but the inspectors just took shortcuts to certify.

Japanese steel never seemed to corrode like GM stuff.

I remember all these GM cars in the 70's, Vega especially, where you could put a finger through the cowling near windshield of a less than 2 year old car.

 

Yes Williard you are correct. Hornbm I just saw two video reports from CNN that said Mazda has confirmed they received sub-standard Kobe metal.

Strictly speaking, the materials could still be acceptable even if the testing wasn't.

I don't watch CNN either I was simply looking for articles that Mazda confirmed they purchased said materials.

Still begs the question, what does that equate to for owners?

Yes terrible source. All I was saying the thread started with assumptions and different media outlets were not all confirming Mazda was affected. Just that Toyota Nissan and Honda definitely were.

Now the question at least for mazda is what was affected...

 

LOL! Sad but true.

 

I guess for us we care most about our RX8s, but maybe those of us who have also bought MX5s, 6s , 3s and CXs are also concerned. We will all just have to watch this story and see if it leads to any definitive evidence on any particular car models.
