Using the manumatic feature in that must be ridiculous. Hey, I want to shift from 8th to 3rd -- click, click, click, click, click.

It's one sweet chariot in my opinion. I read that at least one of the rear seats even have that human touch massage feature built right in. It also sports the latest auto-parallel parking feature that seems quite popular in Japan. Probably pretty useless in most of USA, except in metropolitan areas.

8 speed..... blah..... I am thinking of going to Virginia and picking up a 50's military Jeep with a 12 speed manual trans. It is suppose to be a multi fuel car, it should run on basically anything that is combustable....

When they top that I will be impressed..

8 speeds make the shifting faster and smoother. Quicker acceleration and better fuel economy. Downside is more moving parts to break.
BUT I LOVE TOYOTA's SO I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!
You have to agree this is one of the worlds best cars.

Hmm... one more forward gear than their F1 car...let's just hope it's more reliable.

Toyota wont risk anything, Im sure they did enough R&D on their part before this thing came out.

They cant Ruin Lexus's name, its their cash cow/money tree

Damn, I think my father might want one too. The auto parking system is great for him :P

lol, why do I have to agree on that?

8 speed transmission is just a gimmick. If they'd develop a high horsepower CVT, that would benefit the car much more. Lexus is all about gimmicks though.

^ like the auto parking feature... although it was said in one review that once you get used to using it, it is really easy to use.

Bah... automatic anything! Manual rules! Rules I tell you!

Uh, actually, the 8-speed is reportedly 10% lighter than the 6-speed it replaces.

Lexus is one of the smoothest rides around - there is no question - it is not all gimmick - for a person who wants the smoothest ride they need to go lexus - I have ridden the rest - none of them I have been in are as smooth - while this is of course a bit general, most I meet will agree to this fact.

Seems like a nice car. I just read an article about it, and towards the end of it they mentioned a future model with cameras that detect people walking outside of the car and the driver's face. Whenever the driver's head turns away from the windshield, the car starts to panic. That's going a little overboard. Guess it's only a matter of time before you don't even drive the car anymore.

I read it drives beautifully but still too much like a sedate Toyota.

Smooth is great...for people with osteoporosis, or pregnant women, or the uninspired point A to point B people. I like to feel the road so I know what the hell is going on with the car and traction conditions, and in case you run over the neighbor.

The (only) beauty about automatic transmissions is the planetary gearsets. You can stack them in series and the amount of gear ratios selectable doubles each time. The 8 gear only has one more gear set than a 4 speed auto. Running low gear through more gear also make the reduction in any one set smaller so you can get away with smaller bands/clutches and less heat problems per the same torque transmitted.
