I'm not totally sure, but I think that Atkinson engines have a narrower powerband than ordinary otto cycle engines (?). I guess that would explain why they're using a CVT, and why the only other cars to use them are hybrids. At any rate, it's good to hear that Mazda can produce them without the extra expense of a supercharger.

I do hope Mazda takes a look at that atrinson-rotary though. Smaller than a wankel, with no efficiency penalty.
