"Secret" Testing of next gen Mazda 3 in Iceland Draws crowd

http://www.perthshireadvertiser.co.u...3103-21979076/

Its also a nice "First Drive" review-

What I can say is that it handles and rides beautifully.

Think BMW 1 Series when it comes to refinement. Think Audi A3 when it comes to that razor sharp precision handling and you are almost close to the next Mazda3.
Mazda believes it can cash in further with the next generation model which will weigh 25 per cent less than the current car.
Naturally, Mazda is not giving away too much at this stage other than to confirm two new engines - a 2.0-litre 150hp injection and a 2.2-litre 185hp turbo are nearing final testing.
Very Nice

I hope the NA engine is direct injected!

Zoom, are these going to be built in Japan when it reaches the US market?

I wonder why 185hp, the current turbo direct injection is far more.

It sure does resemble the concept that we saw previously. They said it was a fake.

when they talk about a "2.2 turbo 185 hp" i think they are talkin about the new diesel engine presented in these days at Paris..

not a turbocharged gasoline engine......IMHO

that test looks VERY organic kind of similar to their concept design idea cars.

Lets hope it handles better than the A3, razor sharp precision handling is not a phrase I would use to describe that belugas handling.

^ that's what I was thinking. I've never seen someone talk about an A3's "razor sharp handling." The current Mazda3 is probably already sharper.

Mazda believes it can cash in further with the next generation model which will weigh 25 per cent less than the current car.
This sounds really promising. What's the current car weigh - like 2950 or something? That's comes in at just over 2200 lbs. Did I read that right? The entire car will weigh 25% less or just the body structure?

+1. Audi and razor sharp handling seem self-contradicting to me too. I hear the new A4 is greatly improved, but the previous A4 wasn't much of a handler. The only Audi that I see getting good notes on handling seems to be the R8.

Perhaps he got the BMW and Audi switched for refinement and handling? That would make more sense.

Ya seriously! I checked out the new Mazda6 today, its a very nice car, love the fenders. However once I get inside, its the same "made in USA" feel I got when I testdrove the Gen1 Mazda6. The leather is cheap, the plastic pieces are kinda lose, the paint feels kinda thin and cheap. If they brought the JDM Mazda 6 here I would be a lot less frustrated since we're in need of a new family car. This new Mazda 3 certainly gives me new hopes!

If they're 100% Japan made then it'll be a bonus, no mexican MZR engines please (mazda6)!

Paul.
If it does end up looking like that it'll be sick. I saw somewhere that they might only bring a sedan version in the inital launch? I am more interested in the hatch.
