Scion FR-S dyno video
173HP to the wheels, the same as the rx-8 :(
|
not bad...it will have a ton more aftermarket support than the rx8 though thats for sure.
|
That's a little lower than I would expect/hope to get from an MT 8 but not too far off. I think 180-190 isn't too far fetched for a healthy 8.
The torque is a bigger difference. It looks to have a higher peak torque and lower at lower rpms. Knowing peak numbers is fun and all... but a graph would have been WAY more useful to see. |
Not into Scions...even if it has more horsepower than the rx8.
|
I dont really care whose name is on it. If it meets my needs and has the looks and performance I want, I don't care about the name on it. I definitely don't like scions, but that's because I haven't been a fan of the products or their advertising. If they produce a quality car that suits what I'm looking for, I wont just rule it out because of a name.

I guarantee the FRS has much smaller gearbox and differential than the 8 much more akin the those in the MX-5, hence some of the other parts in the equation of hp and torque comparisons at a chassis dyno between the RX-8 and FRS.
I think I should put a renesis in an FRS :). Paul. |
The accompanying dyno graph is here:

If you plot that out against the gearing it will be apparent why the reported acceleration times are slower than an RX8, one lone piece of the puzzle does not a picture paint ....
|
With similar HP and acceleration as the RX-8, it's nice to see MPG ratings up to 25city/34hwy. I never broke 20mpg in my 8, even with the most conservative highway driving. It's going to be hard to beat the driving experience of an 8, but reviews are looking promising...
|
I think some of the reviews pointed out that the 0-60 took longer than anticipated because 2nd gear topped out at 59mph and they had to shift to 3rd. The quarter mile times more or less match the RX-8's...

^good point. That was the reason 2nd gen rx-8 were slower 0-60. Had to shift to third with the shorter gearing.
|
What's with that 20 lb-ft torque dip at 4000rpm?
Also, apart from the differences in weight and gearing, there's the extra 2000 rpm band RX-8's have. |
Meh, not impressed. Scions.... kid cars... I rather be caught in a 1996 v6 Mustang that blows smoke and needs a paint job...
|
Well, here's the FR-S with the TOYOTA V8 NASCAR engine. Looks sloppy, at the moment, as a drift car.
