IMO as a Mazdaspeed 6 owner, it lacks a lot of fun factor, especially when comparing it to the likes of compacts mentioned, and various coupes and roadsters. The Legacy GT is more fun to drive IMO as well. Of course I don't care at all because it's my daily driver, it looks fabulous inside and out, and is very comfortable. I have an S2000 for fun. I have driven a regular Mazda 3 hatch and it already has more fun appeal to me, but it's just not very powerful. I'm sure the Speed 3 is a much better car in the fun factor of driving for most people.

This is subjective, but the Speed 6 is more of a luxury car then an enthusiast car IMO. It's simply gonna take a beating in an enthusiast state of mind because it's really not all that much of an enthusiast car to most. It's also selling now for $21-22kk (Sport Model), because there is essentially no demand. Go beyond an enthusiast passion and look at the car for what it offers as a daily driver, the price, the good power and decent handling for it's size and weight, and it's a superb machine all the way across the boards. I can see though why it's failing, because it's really lacking a lot from a pure enthusiast standpoint, and it was expected to be more then it is performance wise.

Since I don't really go to the track, the thing I most care about is the fun to drive factor.

In fact, the RX-8 has a more numb feel through the steering wheel that the Protege (of course, the RX-8 still communicates plenty of feedback). Unfortunately, it seems to be a direction that Mazda is going in: the customers want "more refined" steering, that is: more numb.

I was disappointed in driving the Mazda3: it was noticeably number than my Protege, which is why I was never going to buy one, despite a better engine and a fancier interior.

So I really really hope that the Mazdaspeed3 steps up the game and gives us that sharp Miata-like feedback. But my hopes are low.

(From what I've heard, the new 3rd gen NC Miata also has more muted feedback, compared to NA/NB Miatas, but I've never driven the NA/NB Miatas, so I can't compare.)

I agree 110% with everthing you said. I traded in our NB Miata for the RX8. I still miss the Miata, IMO it was more fun to drive. I drove a friends P5 that thing was blast to drive.

I'm sure that the MS3 will also be a blast to drive, don't know about the torque steer though.

Low resale value due to oversupply and low demand. Just like the 8.

If you listen to the reviews, there isn't much of it.

Note, both FWD cars are rated at less hp then the 8, making a even better showing...
HP rating means squat. HP to weight ratio is what's important. Look at the Elise

Well the MS3 has a decent ratio

MS3= 1432 kg, 263 hp, 280 ft/lbs
-
Rx8= 1389 kg, 232 hp, 159 ft/lbs

Giving up 43 kg (which for the US brethren= 94.6 lbs) with the extra power.... makes me seriously consider swapping my Rx8 lease for a MS3..(snowboarding season is coming up quick here)
