We all knew this day would come in some form. . . but with no rotary car in its wake, its especially hard to stomach. Guess we wait for the global economy to support launching a sports car and wait for the Mazda engineers to make the rotary into a high mpg powerplant.

wcs 04-16-2010 05:33 AM

meh, I love my RX8 but to be honest .... Mazda and the RX8 deserve this....

No matter how you sugar coat it, the RX8 is an under powered gas consuming fucking pig EOL

Yeah, the powertrain is outdated... even in '04 it wasn't the top contender, but now with direct injection tech and gas that is 3 bucks a gallon everywhere, the powertrain deserves this

... but the chassis is still top notch, and there really won't be any "practical" sports cars out there, in my opinion.

Psylence 04-16-2010 05:50 AM

Shit. Guess I should really try and work a deal on that R3 at my local dealer then...

Yes... before they find out about this. . .

Bigbacon 04-16-2010 06:00 AM

is this just in Europe or world wide?

why does everyone think these cars eat oil like they eat gas? (I was looking at the comments on the link above)

over the 70000 miles i had my rx8 i went through about 3 cases of oil besides oil changes. This is natural, this is what was expected.

Psylence 04-16-2010 06:19 AM

So anyone got a couch I can crash on for a while... I think I'm gonna have a grumpy wife pretty soon. I promised her I wouldn't buy another car till late summer!

a little bit yes....but people else where seem to think the car just eats through oil like a tank a fuel and you need to fill it up all the time. its not that bad.

Yeah, really sounds like you love it. I don't know about you, but the car is more than fast enough for me, and at 24 mpg I'm not complaining about fuel consumption either.

Love the car, love the motor. I've had a lot of cars, and this is one of my favorites of all time...

I don't know either. I check my oil every 1000 miles ( I just reset tripmeter "B"), but I don't really need to. I only need to add about a third of a quart in 1000 miles, so it feels like I'm being overly attentive. I've had older used cars that consumed more oil than this, so it seems like nothing to me.

I think this may be perpetuated by people who have never owned one and have "heard" they use a lot of oil...

wcs 04-16-2010 06:55 AM

it wasn't until bigbacon said anything... and i dont know what the fuck he is talking about

NErx8 04-16-2010 06:57 AM

I use ~1 qt every 1,000 miles with the Sohn adapter and increased OMP flow through the AP.

SouthTexas8 04-16-2010 07:19 AM

Only way I feel this affects me is it probably means fewer parts and modifications. Especially true for those of us with '09s and '10s. Probably shouldn't look forward to modding my car much when the warranty's run out in 3 or 4 years.

go to the link and read the comments people left.... there are a lot of people that bash on the car for just eating through oil like it's gas, and I see that every where when this car comes up (except here). Why does everyone outside those who own one or know about them, think that the oil consumption is outrageous?

for the 09/10 guys, this does kinda suck but it might also mean that all of us start getting less service and even worse warranty service.

Spin9k 04-16-2010 07:47 AM

...wonder how long now before US regs force the same announcement from Mazda here.... something like...

"Opps... we can’t figure how to make a CAT big enough to stifle our RX-8 emission spewing rotary - so dang it - we did went and euthanized the thing. Sorry."

I'm sure it is coming. If the EU does it, we'll do it next I'm sure.

Not to mention no aftermarket support and very limited & expensive used parts market.

rotarygod 04-16-2010 09:05 AM

The car is at the end of it's normal life cycle anyways. This really isn't surprising news.

kvndoom 04-16-2010 09:16 AM

Shame such a great chassis has to go to the wayside because of the engine.

+1

Thought from the get-go it was slated for 7 years. Only reason it was even being considered is the delay in the next-gen rotary.

Bigbacon 04-16-2010 10:02 AM

so do you guys think we'll actually see another gas powered rotary car?

Agreed. However, it always a sad moment when the axe finally falls... :wavey:
