RX-8 Or S2000?

I'm looking for an opinion on which is more important- a convertible top or a rotary engine.

Please assume:

Money is not an object.
I want both equally.
I don't need a back seat.
The car will be a DD.

I have always been a fan of the Rotory engine but I also want a convertible. my current car is a 2006 Civic Si but I don't like it any more. I'm heavily right side up on the Si.

The RX-8 weighs about 150 lbs more, but the S2000 is less practical for a DD.

There I did the search for you. Welcome to the forums!

id suggest driving both to see what u like. I couldnt stand the feeling when i test drove a s2000 it felt to numb to me in spots. the mpg would probably be better

the 8 feels better to me but requires a little more attention. the 4 seats are surprisingly useful for the office though i dont like other people in my car.

alfy28 08-25-2008 11:28 AM

DD car, i guess would go wtih the s2k. since back seat is not some thing you worry about.

not sure, all i can say is that this is the first time this type of thread has ever been created on rx8club.com.

Greenblurr93 08-25-2008 12:44 PM

Well, if money isnt an object... get both.... drive both..... sell whichever you like least

Don't link a search. They expire after a short time, so it's an invalid link.

that's an awesome solution. if your goal becomes having to ultimately sell a car, it becomes much easier than picking one to buy.

SilverHokie 08-25-2008 01:53 PM

Make sure you can fit in the s2k. Didnt really adjust well to me. Fun as shit though...

RK 08-25-2008 02:00 PM

So your debate is a convertable or a rotary?

http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/...6101990003.jpg

FTW!

Jedi54 08-25-2008 02:03 PM

put a 20b in an S2k

jones75254 08-25-2008 02:05 PM

Get the S2000, there are already too many new wankers (pun intended) out there!

Yeah man, easy fix. Go drive them, pic the one you like the best, simple as that. If ur a lil fella the S2000 is the car for you (just because ur fixated on a covertible). If in between, then only some test runs will tell you.

If you are a big boy, try cramping into the s2000 then imagine a big friend next to you. The s2000 is a weekend car, I like it, but like you said not a practical DD. I know 3 people that own em and they are all little people.

Yeah, and nobody has made that comment in this thread before. You win. Way to go.

S2000.

CyberPitz 08-25-2008 03:53 PM

TBH, the only way to figure it out is to drive them both. Then you will know which to pick.

rollerbldes 08-25-2008 04:16 PM

S2k is overpriced

dozer 08-25-2008 04:18 PM

did you post this in the s2k forums too? are you part of the civic forums too?...anyways welcome to OUR forums, this is always an on going debate about people not knowin what they want, some of us will say get an 8, some will say get the s2k...personally i like em both, but the 8 felt more like MY type of car, as soon as i got it, it greeted me with comfort and 9k rpms...the s2k felt good too but not as good

alexisthemovie 08-25-2008 04:19 PM

I have posted extensively about this. I used to own an 04 AP2. Looked into an RX8 as well before I purchased it. Totaled it in late June and I'm about to pick up my RX8 in a few days...

What's the cheap alternative then? Must offer the same or more, (240hp, convertible, rwd, reliability)

alfy28 08-25-2008 04:41 PM

WTH is a S2000 any ways??

RK 08-25-2008 04:50 PM

Ok. Since you're asking us to help you choose between two completely unrelated things (Wankel vs. Convertable) here's a decision matrix:

1) Are you bald?

Yes: Get the convertable
No: Continue to Question 2

2) Do you live someplace where it hasn't rained in 3 years?

Yes: Get the convertable
No: Continue to Question 3

3) Do you not know what snow looks like and put on a turtleneck when the thermostat drops to 60 degrees?

Yes: Get the convertable
No: Continue to Question 4

4) Do you enjoy asking people you don't know questions that only you can answer?

Yes: Get the convertable
No: Continue to Question 5

5) Does you get offended when your place of worship describes heaven without mentioning VTEC?

Yes: Get the convertable
No: Shave your head. Return to Question 1

Seriously the s2000 and 8 are two very good cars that appeal to completely different subsets of people. If I was that in love with convertables I'd get a RX-8 to drive daily and on the track and get something like old Merc. 560SL to cruise around town in when the mood fits.

But that's just me. You're the only one who actually matters in this decision.

JRichter 08-25-2008 04:56 PM

Get an S2000 and a $2-3k RX-7 project car.

hahahaha, wow. that actually made me laugh out loud. that was really funny. i have never seen snow and anything temperature under 60 feels like hypothermia to me. why do i have an rx8? :(

greg985 08-25-2008 06:04 PM

If he wanted to be original he should have asked if he should get a 350z or an Rx8 :uhh:

Razz1 08-25-2008 09:47 PM

Take a test drive first. Then ask.

Pontiac G8.

VikingDJ 08-25-2008 11:24 PM

Former 04 RX8 owner switching to an 06 S2K. As an extra part time, half daily driver, Objectively I gotta say the S2K, because it's just a more thrilling car overall. The RX8 though is just such a great all around sports car, and for year round daily use, I couldn't see making the switch. If my RX8 was my daily when I owned it, I'd have never replaced it with an S2K, but if the less comfort more raw sports car feel, and of course the unbeatable droptop ability fits your needs, then I think over time you can get used to an S2K. They are VERY reliable, a bit faster, and get several more mpg then the RX8 as well, so that's always a plus. You can't go wrong either way IMO, it just depends on what you want. They each lack what the other has in certain aspects. :)

Mikeluvs8 08-25-2008 11:51 PM

s2k so my car will be rare...

Well, I can add an extra gal in my Mazdaspeed 6, and after I choose who I want, just take them in my S2K.
