RX-8 or Renesis Miata?
RX-8 or Renesis Miata?
Assuming there will be no new RX-7 and Mazda offers the next Miata (due in ~18 months) with the Renesis (persistent rumors) would you take the Miata over the RX-8?
My vote would be yes because to me the RX-8 is a 'tweener. I think the RX-8 is not as fun as a two seater but not practical enough as a people hauler. I know for some this 'tweener mix is perfect.

Second, they're different types of cars. One can't replace the other - I want both!
Can't afford both, though, so I'll stick with my current RX-8 and '96 Miata. :DRegards,

The NC Miata will be based on a shorter, narrower version of the RX-8 chassis, but IF they build a shorter, narrower, convertible vehicle on the RX-8 chassis, it will be called RX-7, not Miata (nor MX-5, since it's quite likely that the Miata name will be retired when the NC MX-5 is introduced).

I'm sure you've heard the saying "never say never". Also, I know you remember our Miata insider, Bwob, stating Mazda would not do a more powerful or blown/turbo NB Miata. I seem to remember something about design and certification costs would guarantee a loss on every Miata. I guess Mazda decided to take the loss. "Never say never":D
Anyways, I wasn't looking to discuss if the NC Miata will actually get a Renesis. I dunno even though there has been a lot of rumors. My main goal of starting this thread was to judge how many RX-8 owners bought the car for the car as a whole or solely because of the engine.
Mazda's advertisement for the RX-8: "Weight is the Enemy!" Makes perfect sense for the NA rotary engine. If they drop the Renesis in a Miata, the lightweight roadster segment would have a new champion. btw: plz make the Miata more manly looking in the next rendition.
never. <- said it :o
it'll never happen. the Mazda 5/ MX-5 is piston only. i couldn't imagine how badly that would screw up their branding of the cars.
RX-7 guys, other than the VERY few FC 'vert owners, would never ever want to drive around in a "weak" all-motor drop top RE Miata.
Miata guys wouldn't want some kinda weird rotary engine that was completely unfamiliar and gas guzzling, "too much performance for the street" old fogies who buy most of these cars.
the RX-7 and Miata/5/MX-5 must necessarily remain unique of each other.
it will never happen.

Also, I ain't no damn "old fogie" ya hoser!:D If us Miataphiles were "old fogies" why the heck have there been so many turboed and supercharged Miatas built? Not to mention the V8 Miatas using Ford, Rover and Toyota engines.

I think that if they use a shortened rx8 platform (like in the new miata) and have a rotary engine in the car it will probably be a 4th generation RX-7 or a RX-9, not a Miata.
