RX-7 convertible vs MX-5
Actually I enjoy my RX-8 auto quite a bit, but i'm sure it would be considerably less so if it didn't have the manual shift mode. I mostly drive it in the manual mode. I'm sure an MT would be even more fun. Wish they'd come out with one with an SMG instead of a torque converter automatic. That goes for the MX-5 as well.
Well, assuming my plan pans out, the MX-5 will be the "sunny day only" car, and the RX-8 will be my daily driver. Doesn't make sense from a gas standpoint, I realize, but I frequently need the rear seat for my four legged buddies (I have a doggie hammock to prevent damage), and I don't know that I want a convertible for a daily driver. Concerned about noise, security, etc. I don't usually have to park in real seedy areas, but some of our parking lots around here have quite a bit of break in problems.

I own a first gen Miata and a RX-8 which just replaced a 30k mile RX-7 convertible. While the RX-7 was a beautiful car, I'd take the Miata anyday. The chassis in the Miata is noticably stiffer than the RX-7 and the power to weight ratio is probably about the same.
My RX-7 never had any problems and was fun to drive, but not as fun as the Miata. BTW, the manual top on the Miata is quicker and easier to put up and down than the power RX-7 top.
In your price range, I'd go for a 2nd gen Miata for better fit and finish and a little more power. Luckily, autos don't go for much so you'll probably save some money there. Take your time shopping and you can find a great Miata in your price range.

If you must have an AT you should at least give an MR2 Spyder a test drive. It's probably the best choice since it has an SMT, handles really well, is faster than an MT Miata from the same time, and is 2200 lbs. of mid engine RWD fun. If you've never driven one don't discount it as just a girly car, they're a blast.
Now the 2nd gen MR2 Turbo, that is one hell of a car. Especially the pre 93 cars before they wimped up the suspension. I have had some funnnnnnnnnnnnnn experiences in those.
