Smile RX-3 Revival At Tokyo M Show

"Motor" Australia's second most popular main stream new car mag says that there will be a 2 door 13B RENISIS rotary coupe using the latest MX-5 (Miata) platform on display at the 05 Tokyo Motor Show called an RX-3!.

A very small photoshop pic shows a 1974 RX-3 Coupe side/body with a revised RX-8 look front....their impression.

That's was all said in this brief "News" item... perhaps this is the RX-7 many have waited for?

I personally cant see Mazda releasing a brand new car that will compete (rotary 13B) with the RX-8 for sales.

OR, the article could just be a journalists dream!

OR, It could be just the SENKU?

Thought it was worth the post.

a 2 door/2 seat rotary car wouldnt be a direct compeditor to the rx8, people in the market for a rotary car, or a sports car would look at both.

It would be just like the 350z and the G35SC, both very similar in performance and price, both similar in style....one is 2 seat, one is 4.

I Recall reading a report to a journo, where a Mazda offical said 'we can't just produce sport cars', even though I would like them to, the reality is that these type of cars are and will only ever be after their inital launch.. limited sales numbers in return for production development costs.

With the RX-8 and MX-5 combined their production numbers are around 8% of Mazdas total vehicle production. Producing another sports cars will take sales numbers away from the 8 and 5.

Its just not viable.

that was the outgoing design chief josef bakaj and he was not correct. Mazda has a new upsized 6 on the way, the Mazda5, the mazda3, the new cx-7, the tribute (a possible replacement for or redesign of seen by some at 7stock), a new/redesigned minivan on the horizon plus the mazda2 selling around the world. they are hardly only doing sports cars. They have the MX-5 and the RX-8. A 2 seat coupe would fill out the lineup quite nicely. it wont take sales fromt he MX-5 because it isnt a convertable. It wont take sales from the RX-8 because it doesnt have 4 seats. The majority of 8 owners purchased the car because its a really cool car you can take your freinds to dinner or your kids to school in.

The redesigned MPV is already coming out in magazines here.

Damn... I wish I had posted right after reading... I found a guide for the TOkyo Motorshow which was going over the cars that are going to show up. There'll be the full Mazda lineup, the Senku, HRE RX-8, HRE Hybrid Mazda5 and another concept car that has been mentioned here before (a hatchback thing).

I did see a magazine in seattle and rough picture of the "rx-3" It looked extremely similar to the 8, but this renesis is rumored to have the normal output vs. the high output 8 has...210hp on both manual and autos...

You forgot to add the 3 or 4 micro cars that they market domestically, and why would be an outgoing design chief be wrong, in your opinion he is wrong. As I said the reality is that another "sports" car would not be viable.

The Mazda 5 is not a volume seller and is only doing well in Europe, we don't/won't sell it here in Oz because of the Premacy flop. These style of cars are really hard to find a market for, and to be a volume seller.

I am not sure about the CX-7, I would like it to sell well, but again, who are they going to market it to, and this type of mini SUV/AWD is already well represented in the marketplace. Again will it be a volume seller?

It takes about 4 years of good sales/prodution before the car maker even starts to make any money from the venture.

Also why did Mazda not export their domestic MX-5 2 Door Coupe as a "Non convertible coupe" you desire, its not a rotary though.

I like Mazdas as much as the next bloke, but their present good image and profitability could suffer. I am sure they will make the right choice.

Pics will be up before I can go, but I'll give my comments, etc. after I make the trip this weekend (if the wife will let me out :embarrased: ).

The Premacy does decently in JDM... particularly the more aggressive styling of the new one. Actually the Axcela/Mazda3 seems to only be doing so so... I hardly ever see one. The Atenza/Mazda6 is doing decently it seems... see a number of those. Most Kanto-area households only have one car and it's got to hold the whole family. If they have two cars then the second is a Kei class (light 660cc class) car for the housewife to drive (cheap to buy, cheap on gas, cheap on yearly tax, cheap on insurance and even cheap on tolls). What would you buy? Take a guess why wagons are so popular...

Looks like no RX-3

Just the Senku....

There is always next year...

I think you will see a major facelift and interior update for the RX-8 then?
