Road & Track's installment of automotive designer- Tom Matano (designer of the FD)

Designer of the FD and Miata. You can tell his design language still has classic flowing lines of the FD RX-7 and NA Miata.

To me, he is the most influential design from Mazda. His creation of the Miata and FD still remain completely beautiful and timeless. I truly believe the FD is by far the more beautiful car to come out of Japan and I look at its lines as the modern Japanese E-Type, which I think is the most beautiful car.

Great piece. It's nice to look into the mind of a talented man like Tom Matano.

While Tom may have been chief designer of these cars, the real hand behind the FD RX-7, NA Miata and many other gems is Wu Huang Chin; my favorite automotive designer.

I live in detroit and when I talk with my co-workers about our vehicles I tell them I have an rx7, and they are big old school muscle car guys but all love the look of the FD because it is timeless.

Then they kinda shrug their shoulders when I tell them my rx7 is an FC

Wow, I did not know that. I did a little google search on Wu Huang Chin and the results definitely weren't as plentiful as other designers. Good to know.

Care to share any other historical insights on the development on the RX's and Miata's?

That's cool. A few years back when I was looking at colleges and majors to choose , I looked into automotive design. I had an interest in ACCD in Pasadena Cali but was hesitant on moving out so far west from home. How is the tuition and portfolio required for acceptance at AAU?

I ended up staying in NY for engineering and at times I still wonder what it may have been if I went for the design path .
