Report: Mitsubishi official says Evo franchise is dead
http://www.blogcdn.com/www.autoblog....olution-mr.jpg
According to Gayu Eusegi, head of global product development for Mitsubishi, the Lancer Evolution X will be the last Evo the Japanese automaker ever builds. Eusegi says the move is part of a shift in strategy to put the company's product focus and ethos on leadership in EV technology. To that end, Autocar indicates that Mitsubishi will release eight fully-electric or hybrid-electric cars by the time 2015 rolls around, and make a grab for a big portion of the CO2-reduction market share. It goes without saying that the fun-yet-fuel-swilling Evo just doesn't fit that mindset, particularly since it apes a rally car that no longer exists. Despite the Evo's huge popularity, Mitsubishi apparently isn't scared of the step and says it's confident that consumers will glom on to the idea and rally behind the brand. By killing the Evo, they're making their intentions plain to an increasingly environmentally-conscious car-buying public. Eusegi killed dead any notion that the brand would roll out a performance-oriented hybrid as well. "Maybe the world can change, and maybe someday we can do a motor race by electric vehicles. Maybe then we can enter the market agian," he said. This report of the Evo's death would seem to stand in contrast to multiple reports that an Evo XI is in the works with a hybrid drivetrain. We're taking this latest Autocar missive with a few grains of salt, as we can see how Eusegi may have simply meant that an Evo that relies exclusively on internal combustion is dead - a hybrid Evo would seem to offer a nice technological bridge to Mitsubishi's more electrically minded future. |
Well, that's just not cool...

now that I think about it, does Mitsubishi even have anything to offer other than the Evo? as far as sporty and fun goes
Not eclipses |
^ TV's and DVD players.
OH! And the electrical connection to our air pump. |
omg that sounds TERRIBLE, and i'm inclined to think it's a terrible business move.
move over toyota, we have another boring, bland, prius-wannabe on the rise............... |
^^ Lancer Ralliart

:sadwavey: good bye EVO. you'll be missed.
I hope subaru doesn't go limp with no competition now. |
That's kind of really depressing... I always favored the evo over the sti and liked the X.
|
so toyota and mitsu have no sports car left :/
|
so all the toyota sports cars are gone?...
and all the evos are gone? ill just have a coke. |
Just mentioned this to someone and they brought up the eclipse... though I'm not sure I count that beyond "sport...y".
|
FAIL
WELCOME TO A NEW BORING AUTOMAKER! Mistubishi... So I guess the WRX is still in the game :) |
Wonder how much this might help Subaru... they might end up picking up some of lost evo sales as a result of this.
|
Considering they invested a fortune to make the Evo X too big, too heavy, and too expensive it's no surprise
Poor choices generate poor results |
^ I agree with the man. Who cares about it being done, it was done with the EVO X.
Both Evos and Imprezas were going downhill since reaching their peak with EVO VI and the mk1 turbo, Tommy Mak edition or P1 anyone? |
They still make great televisions. Like the Laser TV - http://www.mitsubishi-tv.com/product/L75A91
but on a sad note I like the way the EVOs look :( |
This is sad, one less sports car (or sport econo-box) option is never good. I considered the EVO X when I was shopping for my RX-8, but couldn't find one to test drive. Kinda wish I had now...Oh what am I saying theres no way I woulda bought that over my 8!

While the Evo's were quick, sporty cars for the price, at the end of the day they always felt like cheap econoboxes with turbos. I have never been in one that didn't feel like a Civic in terms of luxury. Everytime I see one, it is always being driven wildly by some punk kid. No one drives them like a normal car. I do think they had great performance potential and no doubt were fun to drive. While I have never thought them to be a pinacle of performance by any means, I'll still be sad to see them go.
|
Yeah I saw this as well, there was reports on their facebook saying that it is also not the end of the EVO.
So many mixed sources from many different reliable sources saying everything you can think of. |
|
^ Figured. They sell too many to just end production. There's so many EVO's here in Miami.

Sad Sad future in motoring.
I'll be the guy in the future-when everyone else is driving around in sophisticated, self-driven, non-polluting, hover mobiles-still tearing up the neighborhood in my 2004 26B Twin Turbo RX-8. But on the other hand...maybe I'll be the 'tuner' for the electro-econoboxes of the future. ________ AVANDIA PREGNANCY |
I decided to pull into my local Mitsu dealer yesterday (was getting bored, lol), and I spotted a loaded '11 Evo MR for a whopping $45k! With that kind of price, it makes the car questionable. I realize that there are also GSR models which are much closer to the $30k mark, but it's still very odd to see many of the new models creep up to $40k & beyond.
It's just my opinion, but I felt the last generation Evo really defined what the Evo's greatness was about. I've always wondered how the sales were for the Evo X, compared to the VIII/IX's... :Wconfused |
No more Evo?! I like the Evo look but the price is too high for the younger enthusiasts. You need to be a doctor or a lawyer to afford the evo. Sad but true... :tear:
