Unfortunately most car manufacturers like to make their models bigger and heavier. It's the easiest way to make customer think that the new model is better (bigger is better.) Since most car buyers are not enthusiasts, curbweight is usually not a sales argument. For instance, the new VW Golf has almost double the curbweight than the original Passat had 25 years ago.
And of course the very first Evo weighed about 2700 lbs.
