I'd take the Ferrari. Oh wait.....uh....yea....RX-8. Thought about the same thing. I wanted rear seating and simply love the 8 so much more just because it's so unique.

OBTW maintenence on porsches are friggin expensive.
Oil changes only cost oil, which is Mobil 1 Synthetic, along with a new filter.

I change my own oil, and it's REALLY easy.

I love love love Boxters, but your choices are pretty obvious....

If it's for a daily driver, there's no way I'd want a 5+ year old Porsche out of warranty.

If it's a weekend toy, then there's no need for a back seat or roof.

If the Boxster is free, I'd take it. Sell it to buy an S54 M Coupe.

I have driven the Boxster, and it does handle very well. Nevertheless, it is a "Poor Man's Porsche". Try going to the Miami south beach area. You're going to see maybe 10 911s before you see a Boxster. When I was there, I saw more exotics, cars costing over $100,000, before I saw a Boxster or a RX-8. "Poor Man's Porsche" came out not because of Boxster's lack of handling capability. Rather, those who buys it usually can't afford the 911s - whether this is the reality or not, it is the perception. It's imagine thing.

It's an ignorant perception that comes out of envy. The Boxster is not a baby 911. Did any of you know that? Boxster is a completely different platform, mid-engine 2-seat, roadster, yet shares most of the parts of the 911. It is an ALTERNATIVE to 911 that IMO is a better one. The only advantage of 911 is power, but not by much. But Boxster is better handling to make up for it. The quality, fit & finish & materials are EXACTLY the same. The cost is $25K less when you compare Boxster S with Carerra base cab, giving up only 30HP which can be easily made up with exhaust upgrade. The Carerra S cab tops $100K when loaded. Ouch!

I can easily purchase Carerra cab, but guess what? The darn clutch is much heavier and it feels bigger and not as tossable like the Boxster. To me a sports car should be nimble and light, so yes, to me the Boxster is a better sports car than 911. I didn't say faster, but better, i.e. more fun. To each his own.

The only reason I would get 911 is more prestige. But isn't that way of thinking for *******? I think that explains the wrong perception you are talking about. It comes from the *******.

It's sad when people are ignorant, but that is their loss.

The only reason I would get a 911 is because I think the Boxster is incredibly ugly. Does that make me a ******?

The boxster will have to proove itself on the track before it gets 911 type respect. Maybe Porsche should support it in motorsports. With equal HP, it should outdo the 911.

Because you've got an exemplary tenure here @ the rx8club...

At least he contributed to the thread. Everything he said is true.

I agree, it's usually the uneducated who say it's a 'poor man's Porsche' & assume the 911 handles better because it costs more. Those who've driven them, including 'experts', say the Boxster handles better. Same fit & finish, base may not be fast but neither is the RX-8, yet we all defend its' other qualities when others bash its' power.

From what I read in the reviews, Felicity's comments are dead on. The 911 platform seems forced by Porsche to perform better than the inherently talented mid-engined siblings (Cayman/Boxster) for the sake of upholding 911 tradition and prestige.

Yes, Felicity is spot on. If you don't drink the kool-aid, you'll realize he (or she) is right.

The RX-8 is cheaper and has more utility than the Boxster. But a better sports car? Please.

How frightening is it that someone is considering a $50k Boxster alongside a $25k Mazda RX-8?

I've driven the standard Boxster and it's a great-handling car. I own an RX-8, and it's a great-handling car too! Are they close to the same. No. My RX-8, for a pittance, now wears better anti-sway bars, a better suspension, lighter wheels and wider, stickier tires, and will simply rip a Boxster a new one in the corners, all while carrying 4 passengers and luggage! The RX-8 gets a thumbs-up from everyone who sees it (as I'm sure the Boxster would too). I can do my own oil changes, although repairing other items I'm sure will require dealership assistance. Would I mind owning a Boxster? No. Could I carry my daughter with me, in her car seat in a Boxster? No. That right there is the difference...

Porsch is just a high class VW! It has a nice loud engine, so you can irritate your neighbors, handles well, good power, but everybody drives a Porsch or mustang or Corvette or Honda hohumm

But, get an 8, get a spoiler and a moonroof, keep it clean and people will come over and ask about it -
It has a little more room in the back
It has a engine that allows you to hear your music and you arrive at the end of a trip with your hearing in tact
Low vibration you can really get used to

For sheer comfort I would go 8
For speed get a little red Italian horsy
If you enjoy inflicting pain on yourself and you like brussel sprouts, then get the Porsche

But try before you buy - also check out "Little things thread"

You will like a Porsche, you will love an 8!
