Of Pontiac & Saturn...
So, as we approach the end of Pontiac and Saturn, are the G8, Solstice and Saturn sky destined for greatness as future classics? Are these cars the highlight of brands once on the way to greatness, when the future looked bright for GM? I honestly think so.
I wish they could make the Sky into a chevy to say the least so they can keep it on the market. Even though the Solstice is more organic, I like the curvaceous and creased body of the Sky and the new chevy grill would be right at home on the Sky.
What's your take??

i think the solstice is pretty much the best car gm has ever designed, engineered, and produced (...save the sting ray). it's beautiful, quite original, dynamically decent, and totally american. the fact that they spent so much time and effort developing it and then just trashes it like that shows one of the long running problems of general motors, that they have no principle, integrity, or philosophy. it's a soulless company, and they sure live up to their namesake. they occasionally put out a decent car, but as a whole their tendency is to make crap and behave like ****. even chrysler has more soul and personality than them. makes me never want to approach any gm product ever. but the solstice is so good, if i had a lot of spare cash i'd mothball a gxp coupe. i really have not a lot of sympathy for gm, but for the solstice i hope they'll sell the design to someone else, but that seems unlikely

The Solstice and the Sky will be fremembered as GM coulda woulda shoulda cars. GM has a list a mile long of 1/2 starts and 1/2 attempts. The future has never looked bright for GM in the last 3 decades. The sky has only gotten a bit brighter in the last couple years, but a bit too late.
The Solstice and the Sky were good concepts that were let down by inattention to the details: clausterphobic interiors, no trunk space, ugly/awkward tops, zero storage space, mediocre ergonomics, and cheap materials.

Valid points, but the classics nowadays suffer from exactly that. So, in all, its their rarity that will eventually make it a collector's item most likely.

The superiority of the RX-8 over the Sky, Solstice (and Crossfire) from just about any conceivable measurable standard (except fuel economy) caused me to switch to Mazda instead of GM. It is hard to see how such products will end up as classics. They didn't make to many Pontiac Fiero's either, are those beloved classics? I dont think so.

It's a Cavalier
Absolutely you can. Id say the Fiero was far more interesting a car than the Solstice... an American rear engine sport coupe? It was different. It was a piece of ****, but it was different and fairly daring. The Solstice? Not a bad car, but it's just a Miata wannabee, and it was late to the party.
I wonder if any Kappa platform cars will continue to be produced.

I think the best bet for collectable classice is going to be the Solstice Coupe. It is new for 2009 and I read that they are making only 750 of them. And roughly half will be the turbo version.

i wish they used no chrome body parts on the sky. think it would of looked much better. but as for as rare car. i think it will have a following in the future (both cars)

The Solstice and Sky were splashy looking 2 seater convertibles in the Miata idiom - without the attention to detail and the driving dynamics. GM really didn't improve them much over their short life other than making the Solstice a hardtop and giving them a big engine that still didn't make up for the interior mess.

The Pontiac G8 is just a rebadged Holden Commodore (GM's Australian division).

We all know that the G8 comes from down under, that it's structure is the basis for the new camaro. The fact the few examples that made it to states as Pontiacs is what will make them rare in the future, 30, 40 years from now, kinda like the original GTO.
The Solstice and Sky have the potential of becoming collector's items on style alone. Not every classic is meant for every enthusiast so don't try to force your point across. True, this Kappa cars don't really break new technological ground but they have a certain appeal all their own.

Not any different than GM. Pontiac sells a horrible Korean car called the G3 made by Daewoo. Also known as the Chevy Aveo. My friend has one and it is a POS.
Personally, Saturn selling rebadged Hyundais would be more successful than they are currently.
