This could be the plot for a movie, "Fast and Furious Canada," or maybe "Fast and Furious, the Young and the Rich."
Police in British Columbia say they impounded $2 million worth of high-end vehicles this week after witnesses reported the 13 cars racing on a metro Vancouver highway at speeds of 125 mph (200 kph).
The high-end race cars included a Ferrari, Lamborghinis, Maseratis, an Audi, an Aston Martin, Nissans and a Mercedes, according to a Royal Canadian Mounted Police press release.
Two of the racers would run side-by-side to block other traffic going in their direction on the highway while the others cars would take off in a race, witnesses told the RCMP.

pathetic how in this country, if someone tattles on you, you get in trouble... I few years back i had a speeding ticket, went to court ( quebec ) the cop was never there to show evidence, but the judge said he told me you were speeding lol... I honestly said wtf and was told to leave for swearing in her court room

It's worse than what was quoted. Nearly all the drivers were on their Learner's permit, 15-16 years old.
Sheer irresponsibility on the part of the parents imo. I don't care how rich you are. They didn't buy those cars themselves.
And "12 men and 1 woman" is a gross inaccuracy if none of them are older than 21.

EDIT: dang no super exotics for me..
Although, in all seriousness, they could have seized the cars because they were speeding? that seems a bit excessive...but then again in the US you don't actually have to be charged with a crime to get your stuff seized so... Also they're charging the kids based solely on accusation? I'm not saying what the kids did was ok but I seriously hope the article is leaving something out because theres no way that he-said-she-said reports should be enough for a conviction.

If police were able to charge the 13 drivers with more severe offenses, they could have faced forfeiture of their vehicles, according to a Vancouver Sun report.

if it's just 10-30 mph then it might seem excessive, but at 125 mph, I think that's the right thing to do. Cuz if they hit anybody/any other car, it's pretty much "instant kill", both to their own dumb self and to the other people/car.

Jail time, i'm not the fence about that; suspending their licenses (or revoking until they're legal adults), sure; Seizing the cars, especially considering that with 1 exception they weren't the legal owners of the cars, I still believe is excessive.

Bah, getting your car seized for 125 mph? That isn't racing, its a leisurely snooze cruise, especially for these cars. Its stupid that these kids even have access to these cars, but I was busted doing a lot more than 125 mph when I was younger (several times!) and only got a reckless driving ticket. Now if they are seized and auctioned it seems to me like an easy way to inflate the revenue of the police for that district. Stupid kids + stupid cops = stupid story.

Laws and situations like this scare the hell out of me. The fear is laws like this would come to the United States and become accepted practice.
Florida had laws similar to this where property would be seized if they were suspected in being involved in drug deals or the transportation of drugs. The problem is the seizure laws bypassed the due process aspect of our justice system. Police would seize cars, houses or anything they could get their hands on and the property would be sold at auction even before a conviction (if given) was handed down. Plenty of "asset forfeiture" situations resulted in people having their property seized and they had nothing to do with drugs.
Same thing here. While these kids were clearly street racing, seizing their cars prior to a conviction is pretty serious.
The other problem is these kinds of laws promote running from the police. I'm not going to mince words here...if I did something on the street and was convinced my RX8 was going to get crushed I'd put up a hell of a fight. Thankfully I have enough sense but I've seen people stopped for simply racing up a highway on-ramp.
I don't support street racing what so ever but laws like this simply encourage additional danger to innocent people on the street and no doubt provide a means of making a quick buck for police departments without due process.

some complain/report came from taxi drivers.
i don't know.
i feel safer 10+ super cars blasting by me than driving next to taxi drivers.
wonder if they used hand held cell phone to report which is $165 fine.
