I'm thinking, other than the Mazda corporate nose, it has a BMW look to it.
edit: It's probably just a photoshop chop job of a Z3/4 and adding Mazda features to it. It's only the magazines imagination, much like the suppose of pictures of the next RX7/8/9.

Best car magazine works w/fantasy with Photoshop , but is often accurate on tech specs.
the magazine talk about "retrodesign" "donwsizing" and "1.3 liters engine".
i have a little fear on FF layout (see mazda2 platform), but i'm happy if i'm wrong.

Agreeing with the BMW feel... S2000 is pretty basic in terms of curves, aka there are none, but I love it anyway
I'm also gonna go ahead and this "MX5" looks like complete ****, but then again, the NA is the only MX-5 I've ever really liked... that's probably biased considering it was my previous car, and I'll probably buy another one in a couple years

I've liked every generation so far myself. A lot of people are very partial to the ones they've owned. I'm the same way with RX7s. I like all of them for different reasons.

I would love if there's a rotary in a car like that. Though I'm going to say I disagree with the detail being rotary shaped. It's almost a mix between what they have on the current MX-5 and what we have on our hoods. I'd say it's closer to the MX-5 U-shape than rx-8 rotary shaped.

yeah...at first glance it looks ok but not really feeling it.
yeah seats are just from the r3
don't care for the side blinker vent things, or the hood indention
i like the reworked door panels, and agree it has a z4 feel to it
the hood line is terrible! that's my biggest peeve w/ the current model - it has no flow. it doesn't meet up to the headlights (like the maxima...just ugly), it doesn't curve down in the front to match the flow of the grill - like the designed the whole car and then just made cut lines in a rectangle for the hood....blah

I thought BMWesque look to it as well. This current gen MX-5 has been my least favorite, particularly the original front end. Looked like a bath tub. The updated front end is better. Either way, I hope the car avoids the bigger, heavier, more luxurious cruiser disease. One day we wake up and find it out it morphed in the Mazda SC430.

I remember that quote...
Weight is directly contrary to several officially advertised Mazda paths. Weight isn't fun to drive, and Mazda has stated several times that weight reduction is a significant contributing goal to their overall goal of improved fuel economy.
I can't see anything but losing weight, not gaining. I would suspect that the biggest increases in size over the years (for the MX-5) has been due to mandated safety guidelines, rather than an internal desire. Of course, most of the people mandating those guidelines drive SUVs, not nimble responsive sports cars.

I'm still not 100% believing the extra bit of safety with it. It just doesn't make sense to my engineer-less brain.
