You gotta give the U.S. some credit for the FD--the body was designed in California. When I was in college, we had a guest lecture from one of the stylists who showed us slides of the FD when it was in development (clay models and such) and the competing design proposed by the team in Japan. Management gave the nod to the California design, so that's what went into production.

Yeah--I was aware that the California design team did the FD--I meant place of origin. Regardless of that tho--those boyz on the west coast did the damn thing on the FD. (Standing Ovation Smiley)

That pic of what the next RX-7 might possibly look like has been around for at least a year. I agree that the FD/3rd gen was a great design, and I really hope if they ever do another RX-7, they use an evolution of the FD design.

While it was designed in America, the lead designer of the FD was actually Taiwanese and not American.

I saw some pictures once of a concept RX-7 that looked a lot like the MX-3... was that one the Japanese concept?

Meh..... rumours rumours rumours....... even having spy photos does not guarantee a car is going to come out, so I'll believe it when I see it.

No way will we see a 2006MY successor to the RX-7. That puts the launch at most 1.5 years from now. By now, there would be dozens of prototypes built up and a large engineering team working on the project. The media would definitely be aware of it. Generally, it's impossible to keep a mass-production vehicle program secretive less than 2 years from launch... sometimes even well before that. I believe a 2008 model would be the earliest we'd see an RX-7 successor, if it happens at all. Often, vehicle programs are cancelled at the last minute, even when hundreds of millions of dollars have been invested in the project. There are many examples of this.

This is true--2008 is the earliest that I believe we would see one for sale. They may have prototypes by 2006 testing tho.

This statement from the magazine article alone makes me doubt the validity of the writer........

RX-7 replacement planned

Mazda has officially endorsed plans to build a rotary-powered RX-7 replacement. Boy racers and rotory fans will be able to snap one up by 2006

It's nigh on a decade since the RX-7 last rolled down the production line in Hiroshima, but news is filtering through that will have rotorheads humming.

The new RX-7 concept... its a rotary too!

With RX-8 officially on sale in its major markets, Mazda is now turning to its next sports-car project. The company has officially endorsed plans to build a rotary-powered RX-7 replacement.

In the footsteps of the 1978 original, it will be a sleek, lightweight two-seater. Some platform, suspension and driveline elements will be borrowed from the RX-8 parts bin. Although expected to launch in 2006, a concept will probably be unveiled by Lewis Booth at the Tokyo Motor Show next month.

An amped version of the Renesis RX-8 engine is likely to power RX-7. With wider and stiffer rotor housings, a higher redline, and displacement out to about 1.6 litres, Mazda reckons on output of around 225 kW in normally aspirated form. It appears there will be no turbocharged version. Fear not, though, as for the first time ever, Mazda is working on a supercharged rotary option for RX-7.

The production car, code-named J77, is likely to be shorter and wider than the RX-8. There may even be a cabriolet variant with a fabric or folding hard-top hood.

Forthcoming Japanese performance cars entering the final stages of development include the Toyota Supra, Honda NSX, Nissan GT-R (twin-turbo 3.5 V6, 4wd) and, possibly, Subaru's 300 kW B11S.

The MR looking car was indeed Japanese. The US design, while it was accepted did look pretty ugly. It looked kind of like a tarted up taurus. Thankfully, Mazda design decided to combine the basic layout of the US model with some of the better features of the Japanese model giving us the design we recognize as the FD today. The roofline was more of a last minute thing to comply with aerodynamic requirements.

I just dont see it happening. With all the problems with the prior rx7, it just doesn't seem like a good investment for mazda
