They went downhill in design after dropping the 993.

The front and back have that strange subtle "bubble" curvature that makes it look like a VW Beetle pulled outward at the front AND back. It's almost cartoonishly funny.

And btw, the current 911 isn't much better.

Never liked the 996 either. 993 still my favourite. I'll wait to see the 997 in flesh before commenting, although it looks they went back one step : round headlights and wider rear track and body. The interior shot looks more Cayenne than 911 !

993 is my favorite and this looks more like the 993. Horrible? The CURRENT headlight design is horrible with the wings or whatever they are. I'm glad to see they went back to the oval lights. The interior looks better and has more contrasting detail than the current one which looks more monotone.

uh... they look the same to me. That's what I don't like about Porche, it's beautiful inside (performance-wise) but plain outside. They were just cool when they were ahead of the design. Nowadays, their designs are so outdated.

The pics above make the 911 look like a lumpy calzone.

The 993 had a much more aggressive and muscular look. The current versions look very feminine.

I don't know what the Porsche designers are thinking.... look at the new ferraris, or the new C6, they are taking things to the next level, not stepping backwards to when Porsches looked like bath tubs on wheels.

I agree with you on the C6. I like Vettes 67 and older, and 97 and newer. The C5 looks sexy but is a bit bloated. They really leaned the C6 out and it looks more muscular and menacing.

The C6 has those two fender lines (front and rear) that come real close to meeting at the center of the car, which is just strange and awkward. They should have made the lines taper gradually until they disappeared as they got closer to the center of the car.

I agree with Paulie on the stupid "winged" headlights of the current 911. Recent Porsche front ends have been so amorphous and indistinctive in a froggy sort of way. If the back ends were the same, I guess Porsche could be said to at least be consistent. But the fact is their back ends are VERY distinctive (911, Boxster, and GT) and have those edgy crease or "character" lines without having the overall shape being too angular, which is in stark contrast to their faceless, characterless "bubble" front ends. I mean, just look at how mismatched the GT's beautiful rear end is to the "same ol' same ol' " front. I could easily envision awesome-looking, more chiseled front ends for the GT, 911, and Boxster that would in no way risk sales (God knows Porsche is still paranoid about their somewhat recent collapse). In my opinion, the Porsche design ineptitude approaches that of Chris Bangle in that both are irrational.

Yeech. I wouldn't go that far! The 911 has gotten a bit softer. The BMW's have not only gotten bland but have funky lines on every inch of the car.

The round headlights are a good move, but it doesn't resolve the rest of the car...

Headlights are so Subaru. Well, can't blame Porsche, they are also driven by what's inside. Anyways, you know how it is... "if you can't improve your design, go retro"

I dunno guys, if you didn't tell me it was different from the old 911 I probably wouldn't know. It still looks fine imo. If you are buying a porsche for fresh styling you are in the wrong place.

I like shape of '99 to 01 911's headlights, which were the sames as the Boxster. But 911 owners complained, so in 2002 they went to the current egg shape design. And now, they try to recaputure the 993. So now instead of the 911 being confused for a Boxster, it can be confused for a New Beetle.

Also, judging from some of the responses here and other forum, the new 911 doesn't seem as appreciated as the 993.

Well I just fell in love, I am able to go for a TT V6 - but not the new 997 - I guess it's the closest thing as far as shape, luxury, and awd go. You guys are entitled to your opinions, but as for me I have to change my keyboard after drooling all over it. lol
