New MX-5 Retractable Fastback with PICS

I know I know, this is from Motoring.com.au but still interesting.

NEW YORK MOTOR SHOW: Mazda MX-5 Coupe - motoring.com.au

Anyone heard anything else? I find it interesting that Mazda is unveiling something new at the New York auto show because if it were CX-4 or CX-7 I would have expected to see that in the Beijing auto show as a China market only crossover.

Mazda is so good at keeping information under wraps, who knows what they might have up their sleeve. Guess we will find out in a couple of weeks. All I know is they are in desperate need of some high performance in their lineup.

Yes, I am thinking Hardtop MX-5...it is a bit early for MX-5 HT..
Or could be new CX-4..

I go CX-4 (suv), has not been shown as a production ready vehicle?

It'd be kinda cool to see hard top like this. Just with a LITTLE BIT bigger engine/more power.

Don't know how I feel about this 'shooting brake' type design though. Wayyy too hatchback-y for me. I think they could tone it down a bit.

How about a proper sports car with a permanent roof? This is really getting sickening.

Mr. Saruwatari (an executive in charge of R&D in Japan) in an interview in Italy has said more or less these words: "expect something very different from NC RC "(the actual model of roadster coupè)

New Mazda MX5 Miata hardtop coming to 2016 New York Auto Show?

These guys (actually from Autocar) seem to have had some leaked info...or so they say.

Adding a PHRT to the ND MX-5 isn't something completely different.

Making a permanent roof version sporting the full power 2.5 SA-G engine might be something completely different. With the Fiat 124 and Abarth 124 both having as much power as the 2.5 engine has, that should be very easy to produce for Mazda.

I am pretty sure that the engine blocks between the 2.0 and the 2.5 are nearly identical, so there shouldn't be any logistical issues, honestly.

BC.

I'm not sold on the look of the hard top they just unveiled. Will need to see some more color combos and shots with the top down.

Saw the live reveal and it looked much better. I guess I'm the only one that loves it.

I agree, the reveal looks completely different and I believe the proportions are fantastic. Those photos do make it look ugly, but I was never thrilled with the photos of the RX-8 at all, but when I saw it in person, I could barely believe it was the same car. Some cars just look crappy from some of the angles that photographers use.

Yep, I like the ND, but I don't love it, like the interior 100% over NC, but is no longer a Miata to look at externally, now this thing and the RF is just bloody UGLY. (IMO)

The 'flying buttress' and the fake rear 1/4 window extension just looks cheap and an afterthought...sort of looks like, 'this is the best we can do with the design' approach.

Why I will keep my NC PRHT forever...

I really like it. I've always been a sucker for an open targa top - and this one takes its top of for you! Flyin' Miata, as well as other aftermarket companies will probably take care of the "slow" issues. I wonder if this feature will make its way over to the Fiat...

my opinion is: if we make a comparison with NC RC this is an improvement , less "roadster" when opened, a lot more good looking when closed.

I've read that NC RC was accounting about 50% of global sales of NC. So Mazda needs this version. This car is better than NC RC IMHO.

i still prefer soft top.

Hopefully they are now done screwing around with this car. Now I expect a MazdaSpeed 3, MazdaSpeed 6 Coupe, and RX-7, and fast.

I'm with Zoom, it's gorgeous & the Machine Gray - hey - that's just sexy!
Mazda's new Sports coupé can now morph into a Sport convertible.
It adds new owners, increases sales, and adds profits. How is that bad?

Now if there was an optional >155HP engine, so brawns and beauty, game over, I'd buy it.
