it'd be a serious alternative to any of the BMW roadsters (performance-wise, and then some, i'd hope).

If the 8 hadn't come out, I'd be waiting for the Mazdaspeed Miata, I think. I STILL want one, even with my 8.

it might be kinda expensive. a spec'd out miata now costs ~26k, so the mazdaspeed probably'll cost around ~28k? that's enough for an rx-8 6mt w/ sport package :D

i don't know how you can think that's expensive when it's twice as much for a BMW or Mercedes that's half the driver's car...

This is the car that my wife has been holding out for. But I've told her that we're getting me back into an RX-8 before we trade-up her Miata.

Apparently it only comes in two colors: Titanium Grey or Velocity Red Mica. Looks like the "signature" RX-8 color won't be exclusive to the '8 for too much longer.

The S2000 is $5000+ more expensive than the Mazdaspeed, if they stick with their mid $20k price range. That is a pretty big price difference when talking about twenty-thousand dollar cars.
But yes, they do seem very similar in performance, stlye, handling, etc.

2004 TURBO MIATA 178hp 166 TORQUE

Just got a note from mazda about the new Miata.

Here are some numbers for us 8 owners to chew on

1.8 intervcooled, turbocharged
HP 178 @6000rpm
Torque 166 @4500rpm
Curb Weight 2529lbs

Doesn't that mean, well it sure sound like, they are now going to wamp us on the street AND at the track? And they are our own family!!

Check out full specs:

I don't think the Miata will "womp" the 8... ever. I still think the 8 is the better car... and the 8's base engine still has more power than the Miata's with a turbo!

So, not so sure what you're talkin' bout... but thought I'd throw my opinion in there too.

Happy Holidays!!

Well, we are supposed to be 238HP 159ft-lbs torque. Most dyno tests give us 178 RWHP (some higher, some a little less). Thats about a 25% drivetrain loss. Others may say there never was 238 to begin with, but that's been beaten to death so let's not go there (at least here).

So given the weight difference, roughly 500 lbs, the Miata will have more torque, and only a little less RWHP, perhaps approx 146 (using 18% loss - I don't know what current Miata's diretrain % is).

Since it weighs less, acceleration could be very similar, at least til speed gets up there. I doubt the Miata will exceed the 8s top speed.

All I'm saying is that the new Miata might start getting some newfound respect from far more 'powerful' machines, not to mention the 8s out there! Congrats to the Miata and Mazda!!

Hopefully, the Miata engine and turbo have been designed with the aftermarket tuner crowd in mind.

I'd really love to have it with the red/black interior they're showing on the JP site. Sweet looking car.

The "2004 TURBO MIATA 178hp 166 TORQUE" has been merged with this thread.

Just a side note to keep you guys from getting confused.

The Miata engine has always been pretty strong consider it was made for turbo charging. The old mazda 323 awd turbo was using the same engine.

I believe Flying Miata has a turbo kit for the current miata good for 290 some whp and 250 some lbs of torque. I would say it's a pretty solid motor.
