What’s Happening with the Mazda CX-5 Diesel?
Interesting single exhaust on the car, wonder if that's for EPA testing.
Redline has gone up from the Diesel in the rest of the world. (5100 to 5500 rpm)
I'm hoping this means testing will be completed soon, we'll get an announcement and maybe start seeing these early 2018? (I'd prefer 2017 but not sure that's going to happen)

When it comes to bringing a diesel engine to the United States, Mazda has talked the talk for a long while but has yet to walk the walk. Years ago, the company discussed bringing a Mazda 6 diesel to our shores, but when that fell through, the popular CX-5 crossover became the prime candidate for Mazda’s 2.2-liter Skyactiv-D engine in the States. Mazda confirmed last year that a CX-5 diesel is happening, and we caught a prototype version of such a vehicle running around Michigan this weekend, suggesting that its official arrival may not be too far off. The CX-5 we spotted was devoid of any badging, but certain clues identified it as a diesel-powered model. Look closely and you’ll see an intercooler mounted behind the lower front grille, a tachometer that appears to redline at a low 5500 rpm, and a single exhaust pipe instead of the standard gasoline-powered CX-5’s dual outlets.
Mazda has stated previously that the diesel engine will be offered on the 2017 CX-5 and that it will arrive in the second half of this year. At this point, however, Mazda has yet to share any more information about the CX-5 diesel, which brings that timing into question. A Mazda spokesperson told us that the company is currently working with the EPA and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) toward final emissions certification on this powertrain but wouldn’t share any more timing details. Mazda noted to us that preproduction models may be running around; this prototype has a Bosch sticker on its windshield, which could indicate the supplier—known for its fleet of diesel test vehicles in our area, southeastern Michigan—could be conducting testing for Mazda.
If and when the CX-5 diesel arrives, it’ll have some competition in the form of the 2018 Chevrolet Equinox, which offers a 1.6-liter diesel engine that achieves up to a 39-mpg EPA highway rating. We’ll keep our ears open for more news on Mazda’s oil-burning crossover over the next few months to see if the company can make good on its earlier promises.

Mazda Europe and I don't have a link as it secure, so cant post, cant even find now, you could try and register MME Media, been with them for long time, so don't know the procedure now.
But the Cylinder Deactivation is ONLY available in Europe according to the press info.

As for US Mazda Diesel, Mazda are really peeving me off, at time they are the most dumbest car company I have known, then there is their brilliance, and to think they were above Honda as a brand back in the 70's (#3 in production).
They make dumb decisions and always behind the ball when the momentum is lost.
EVERY time there is 'a reason' why nothing happens, always some sort of world crisis or of not their making or being slow.

Are their diesel engines better now? I know they have had a ton of issues.
Wife and I were potentially looking at a 6 diesel, but I'm wary of the fuel dilution and excessive oil changes.

that seems to have been an issue in the earlier models but from what I've been reading the last year or so, Mazda seems to have resolved those problems some time ago.
I'm quite hopeful for the Diesel and hoping we see it some time soon in the US.

I'd love if Mazda launched Diesel engines in the 3 hatch, 6, and CX-5. I wouldn't know what to purchase - choices. I'd likely get the 3 hatch. Oil changes...I'm fine with every 3K miles OCI.

Looks like Mazda updated their filing with the EPA and we could be seeing signs that the Diesel is preparing to be launched in the US.

Interesting Mazda has just started manufacturing the CX-5 at their Hofu (Japan) plant, which was exclusively for the Mazda 3 and 6 Only.
I guess goes to show the popularity of the CX-5 and the fact that they have spare capacity at Hofu (is a 24/7 3 shift operation) because Mazda 6 and 3 sales are slow and fewer and fewer are being sold, therefore made.
I will say this again, a huge mistake not to offer any V6 for the Mazda 6, yes I know they relied on the 2.2 diesel, but 4 years of lost opportunity with the 6 in the USA without an engine larger than a 2.5l 4 cylinder.
IMO Mazda just keep on making poor planing and investment decisions.

Speaking of car plants, for those interested, Australia no longer makes ANY brand of car.
The last closed their doors a few days ago, that was GMH , General Motors Holden..
Toyota a few months back and Ford last year. Mitsubishi about 6 years ago and Nissan about 20.
So now we only import cars and the end of 90 years of local car making.

This is one of the few areas that I disagree with you. I agree that they need and needed a performance variant for the 3 and 6 but with Mazda's small pockets the wise choice was to stick with 4 cylinder engines. This greatly reduced the chassis design complexity, More mounts and exhaust systems, suspension components and a myriad of other things. What would have been nice (Maybe not financially feasible at the time) would have been the turbo versions of these cars (Petrol) but who knows, now we may get SCCI turbos when we get them.
Paul.
Paul.
If they are going to sell a 'family' size sedan and appeal to families then it has to be 'capable'...
Fantastic if you are a lone driver and weigh only 75 KG (160lbs), but the average for US citizens is what 90+ KG or about 200lbs, add in 2 adults and a couple of kids and the 6 is just a gutless piece that looks fantastic, is superbly made but has no guts or go.
And the lack of the Diesel promised over 3 years ago did not help.
Performance models are great but again not huge volume, like Mazdaspeed 6, in the end it was a heavy overpriced car.
Mazda's formula has been seen wanting badly, yet again.

Just letting you guys know just how well Mazda Skyactiv Diesels are doing in Australia, we have had them since the beginning (2011-12) and were available virtually across every model (except Miata and CX-9).
Every model has been dropped including new CX-5, except Mazda 6 which is now a very small seller and the 1.5 in CX-3 which I expect will go in 2018 as New Zealand has also just dropped it from their CX-3. So just one model...the 6.
Why, price, here it adds about $3500, VW emissions scandal and servicing costs which are higher and to an extent the CX-5 diesel engine issues in the first few years did not help.
I would think very carefully if you are going to be a long term owner in USA of any Mazda Diesel, if you flip regularly you may escape the nightmare, I really don't know why Mazda are doing it in US...I know why Japan is pushing them...but.
On the diesel Only CX-8 (only available in RHD) MMC Japan has given Mazda Australia the green light to order (is available for ADR compliance) but MA are not certain because of extra cost (wont be cheap as it is a diesel) and will be closely priced to larger CX-9?..I really don't see the point.
