The New BMW M5

we just got one in at our dealership today. i didn't really get a chance to explore it and such b/c of work. plus, the sales/general manager were being ****** about people stopping to take a glance at it. i doubt i will be able to test drive the car for awhile since i'm the youngest technician at the dealership (lowest man on the totem pole ) anyways, i'm going to try and snap some pictures of it tomorrow...anyone have any specific shots they want to see???

ok...well, i wasn't scheduled to work today so i didn't get to take pictures. it doesn't seem like i'll get to test drive the M5 anytime either. found out that a customer's E46 M3 had it's wheels stolen last night. so the M5 is definately staying INSIDE the showroom. i'm not surprised tho...the sticker price on the M5 is around $95k, we're putting it up for $106k. wowsers.

anyways, what i've seen so far on the M5.
1. black exterior with black leather interior
2. the head lining is like the E39 M5 and has the suede black leather
3. brushed aluminum trim
4. front seats have automatic/power side wing adjustments
5. preforated leather seats (ventilation)
6. cool light up gauges
7. HUD (heads up display)
8. rear heated seats
9. 19" wheels
10. 2 settings for the EDC
11. signature "M" quad tip exhaust
12. cross drilled rotors, front and back

you guys know the rest of the specs on paper...7 spd. SMG, 400 HP regular, 500 HP with the "power" button, V10, etc. etc. etc.

that's all i can think of now. the M5 doesn't really look that much different from the regular 545i or 550i. obviously the front bumper, sides, and rear are different. but the interior really isn't any different. sounds freakin' awesome tho...wish i could hear it with a 8k rpm load :D my time will come one day...and it will be a good day.

I was checking them out at the motorshow today (couldn't for the Alpina's. The bastards wouldn't anyone near the cars at all). BMW was smart with the M6... removing some of that ugly-*** Bangle elements. I like it better. I think both the M6 and 6 series in general fit this plaform best. But as the car magazines say... the M5 has more room (more useable backseat) while giving essentially the same performance. Looks alone... M6. Real world $$, performance, etc.? M5.

Unfortunately, there's an M aero kit that puts M5 look alike front/rear bumpers on the regular 5's. So one really needs to look for those side grills and quad exhausts to spot them on the street. I really wish BMW would keep their M models more special and not provide these M aero kits for the lesser cars. (Ditto for MB & AMG)

--
Still waiting for our local dealer to get one so I can check it out. If I act serious enough, my old BMW sales guy might just let me take it around the block. But even if I had the cash, I don't think the M5 would be my choice.

The 997 911 S is still my dream car for about the same money as an M5.

The BMW 550 now has 360 hp and does 0-60 in the low 5 secs range. For eveyday use, I'll bet it drives just as nice as an M5. Add the M aero kit + Sport pkg + 6 spd MT SMG and you've got a poor man's M5 for about $60K.

Then again, for $68K one can get 500 hp on a budget with the new Z06 vette and go M5 hunting. With 0-60 in 3.7 secs, the Z06 will kill just about anything on the road.

With options like these, it makes dropping $90K+ on an M5 a hard choice for those who could possibly afford one, but don't have money just burning holes in their pockets. But I suppose the M V10 engine is worth the price of admission.

The problem with the vette is that it is a vette. 2 seats and not a whole lot of practicality. The M5 costs so much because you can go from being a road demon racing maniac to a grandpa cruiser instantly. The vette stays a vette the whole time.

Performace, yes, the vette is better obviously, but the m5 is so silky smooth when you want it that if you have the money, between the two cars it is a no contest. Depends on what you want. Amazing performance, or still great performance with added luxuary.

You are also paying for the names. Chevy vs. BMW. What has better value?

remember...it's not just the performance aspect that jacks the prices up on these cars. luxury, warranty, maintenance, quality of parts, etc. etc. are all included in the price. anyways...

i don't think they'll let anyone drive the car. i may be wrong, but i think you have to put some sort of down payment to atleast drive the vehicle. otherwise, everyone and their mothers will be test driving it. heck, me, an employee who works on these machines isn't even allowed to test drive.

Yah, the dealers will probably only let very serious buyers test drive the first few that come in, and only if the car isn't spoken for. I was able to test drive the e39 M5 with ease, but that was after the car was out for about a year or so. Having bought 4 BMW's in the past, my sales guy treats me pretty well. He even handed me the keys to a 750Li not long ago and said "have some fun". He knows I've been looking to replace the wife's 540i for a while now.

As a customer, I'm glad they limit employees access to cars like that. If I were to buy one, I'd hate to think that every Tom, Dick, and Harry at the dealer had been out for a spin in my M5.

the M5 on our lot is the demo model...it won't be for sale. the M6 is definately a sweeter looking ride than the M5, can't wait til that one comes out.

Well--its growing on me as well as the M6/6 series. Overall I really don't like the design of them though. I wouldn't buy either the M6 or M5--I'd get the E39.

Dealer markups for the win!
I hate that, but hey, I can't blame the dealer if they can get a buyer at the price they're selling. When I was in the market for a car about a year ago, I went around with my brother to test drive/price different cars. This Mitsubishi dealer had an EVO VIII MR and the cost was 42k I asked why it was so high and he said because it was so rare, it required a premium. I didn't like that dealership...mostly because we couldn't test drive the car:p
