NISSAN PLANNING NEW 240SX
Carmaker wants to produce a small cheap coupe for the younger buyer

Nissan hopes to attract younger buyersNissan is planning to unveil an entry-level sports car in 2010 to replace the 240SX.

The company hopes the ‘mini-Z’ will appeal to younger buyers and will fill a gap in the market for cheap front/rear coupes.

In doing so it will also be taking on the rear-drive sports car Subaru and Toyota are planning to build together.

The Nissan is expected to either have a 2.0-lite naturally aspirated engine, or even a 1.6 or 1.8 turbocharged unit, according to Japan’s Best Car magazine.

Despite the small size of these turbo engines, thanks to direct-injection and a Variable Compression Ratio System they could produce 220bhp.

The size of the car is said to closely resemble the previous S15 Silvia.

The new FR coupe’s dimensions are expected to be 4350mm in length, 1750mm in width and with a wheelbase identical to the the new Fairlady/350 Z platform of 2550mm.

The car will cost in the region of £12,000 in Japan and the US, so expect it to be nearly double that when it arrives here.

i dont' know... i kinda liked the 240s.

This car would make sense as it sounds like the 370Z is going up in price and performance. A new RWD 240 would fill the gap nicely and the FWD Altima coupe just doesn't work for a lot of people.

Should be interesting depending on pricepoint and performance and also what Toyota and Suburu come out with. The shot they had looks alright but its at a angle so I'm holding my breath on if i like it or not. That and what will they call it? Silvia, S16, or something along the lines of 240SX but up a numeral. I'd hope they go Silvia and hope to get a Playstation Generation Boost in sales. The name will make fanboi's go nuts.

Why do you say that? Did you read where and i quote from edmunds,"The new FR coupe’s dimensions are expected to be 4350mm in length, 1750mm in width and with a wheelbase identical to the the new Fairlady/350 Z platform of 2550mm."

Dimensions similiar to the porkish 350Z with less Hp(220) meens no owning a RX-8. And i seriously doubt they will make it weigh less than the expecting 370Z.

Funny most cars that are in the same class or just above the RX-8,on paper they should own a RX-8, most of the time they never do. Harsh reality.

Plus by the time this comes out in 2010 , the next RX-? will be on the horizon. So comparing new to old is comparing apples to oranges.

If they could bring back the S platform, and update it so that this would be the S16, that would be enough to make me drool.

But since this will be on the FM platform, and is intended to be cheap... well, that is just another way of saying it will be overweight. Not to mention that in order not to upstage the Z, they will have to make this thing even uglier.

I really miss Nissan of the 1990's... the S15 had 250hp, weighed 2800lbs, cost around $25k, and looked way better than anything Nissan has released since.

this segment is about to be crowded soon with hyundai, toyota, subaru, and nissan, ford, chevy going at it.
the fact of the matter is, there isnt much demand for small sporty rwd coupes in that price segment in the US, I think this market is going to be over saturated.

they can probably do well else where in the world though

i've been telling my friends ever since the genesis coupe was a go, that hyundai was gonna send all of it's competition back to the drawing board.. it's about time we got some small, cheap rwd cars that aren't convertibles.. granted i've seen some fast s2k's and miata's but i don't like convertibles.. hopefully mazda will share the mx-5 coupe now instead of hoarding it in japan..

Market over saturation typically leads to lower prices as competitors fight it out. This benefits the consumer. It'll be curious to see the various offerings and see what the aftermarket response is.
