Are the Nürburgring's public days numbered?

Are the pays-your-money, takes-your-life-in-your-hands days of the Nürburgring's touristenfahren (tourist drives) numbered? According to United Kingdom-based motoring site Pistonheads, there's real worry in the Eifel Mountains that that could be the case.
The culprit? At a very base level, it's the number that enthusiasts love to debate--how quickly a car can lap the Green Hell, and the manufacturer bragging rights that come from having a car's suspension tuned on the famed circuit.
The Disneyfication of the 'Ring has also played a role. The circuit itself is publicly owned by the state of Rheinland-Pfalz and is under the administration of a private entity called Nürburgring Automotive. Note that these public-private racetrack partnerships can work. For example, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca--a track nearly as storied as the 'Ring--sits in a Monterey County park, is administrated by the nonprofit Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula and is supported by dollars from Mazda.

I have often wondered how they get away with Public Insurance at Nürburgring..there have been many bad accidents, even deaths by wannabe racers, pushing their cars way over the limit and then coming up against a slower user on the track, panic, and BANG!

Aha, that was written in response to my column on pistonheads.com - the first draft was bloody awful and they got the totally wrong end of the stick. Here was my retort.

What's happening here is that the dates were released, but with massive holes in them. For example all the weekday evening sessions are missing in April, May, and June. And there are only TWO public days in the whole of June!

It's a bloody nightmare for us (I work at Rent4Ring.de) as the public sessions are our lifeblood!

The public days mean the track is a public road. It's public property too, so it would be like asking how does a dangerous freeway get insurance? It doesn't need to.

Strange... but true.

Considering the amount of wrecks I've seen while there if they haven't closed it already they never will. Every time I go it's very crowded and I'm sure a lot of money is being made since most of the people there are paying the 22 Euro per lap price. Even the year pass is close to a thousand Euro.

I hate the public days as much as MrBTG needs them! Luckily the open pit dates are greatly organized and the drivers are real gentlement 99% of the time.
