Took it and paid my $37 to get it inspected and they failed me for low tread on the rear tires. They are the stock potenzas. I dont do burn outs and they only have 11000 miles... wtf.. is this normal wear for "ultra high performance tires"???

 

Just look at it yourself, but mine lasted the same amount of time before becoming illegal. Look on tirerack or get suggestions for which tire can last longer.

 

Same thing happened to me a couple years ago. Those inspections are so bogus. My tires weren't new but they weren't worn out by any means and they still failed me. Not much you can do about it though.

Have you gotten an alignment?

To answer your question, you should expect about 20K miles if you're good to them or 10K if you're not

Michelin Sport A/S Plus 245/40 18 are guranteed for 45K. They prorate you if they don't last either 6 years or 45K miles. Maybe you should consider an upgrade?

 

Got about 14k on my 08... When I put my summers back on in May, I decided to put the rears on the front and the fronts on the rears...

Definitely will be buying a new set come next May.

"Ultra High Performance" ? These tyres are just ok, that being said, we were able to get 70,000 kilometres from the original set, I **** you not.

 

I would not say that I drive "casual" or "relaxed" most the time. I never tracked my car, but I regularly drive in a spirited manner.. I did an occasional light launch to get a little wheel spin etc, but never anything that would be considered straight up abusive. I managed to get just over 20k miles out of mine before they were starting to need replacement and they weren't even at the point of being completely unusable in my opinion.

I was on stock potenzas as well, so not really sure why yours wore so quickly.

 

what tires are they? If u keep on top of pressures, alignments, and rotations and aren't a big braker (braking kills tires) u should be able to get at least 20k out of any hi-po tire.

 

Look for tire wear rating on the next set of tires.

If you can afford them, michelin pilot sport A/S plus, they have a 45,000 mile warrenty. Thats really hard to beat in a low pro tire. I can tell you I have over 2 years experience in mounting low pro tires. I've got them on my 8 and they drive wonderful, pick up great when accelerating, even have a full Y rating although I doubt I'll be going 186 any time soon.

 

Missed DocBeech's post but he's right. Also make sure you get your tires rotated AND balenced every 6k miles. I've seen balances go out as soon as 4k and if affects the life of a tire. Try to find someone who knows what their are doing, there is different ways you can balance out a tire but some you don't want to use on high performance tires.

Also just a note: anything less than 2/32nds of tred left is considered completly worn by both inspectors, and cops. You can get ticketed for anything less.

 

most good tires have a wear indicator. its going to be a lateral notch between treads, once you hit that mark for you own safety you should get new tires as they are more prone to explode after this point.

 

Ya you should definatly just get new tires. I ignored the wear indicators on my 3000gt and my right rear tire completely came apart on the interstate lol. That car comes with a spare tire, so I didn't have to way for aaa to come out and tow me somewhere tho.

 

Tires are made with different levels of softness. If I'm not mistakend, they are grade by a letter of their degree of softness or hardness. the softer the tire, the more sticky the traction, but also the faster it they wear. So next time you shop check for this and also the mileage guarantees as stated.

Not true. The wear bar is where the DOT approved legal tread depth is. Once it's down to or past that point, the tire is illegal for road use. At this level, the tire is fine and will still have good grip on warm dry surfaces. It will be very slick on wet surfaces though as the tread blocks will no longer shed water away from the center. This is where the tire becomes dangerous. It is not in danger of blowing up. If you have cords showing, or bubbles in the side wall or tread face, then you have to worry about it popping.

So, if you are at or into the wear bar, your tires will not pass inspection. 11k on the stock potenzas isn't out of the ordinary. They're a low tread wear rated tire. I had RE050 PP's (140 rating) on my 8 when i got it. I chewed through them in about 8k. They were sticky and a lot of fun. I have no regrets. Next years summers will be Star Specs, RT615's, T1R's, R1R's or NT05's depending on what deal my friend can get me. As Razz said. You gotta pay to play.

There are some good suggestions on tires so far, but remember all-seasons are really no seasons. A mediocre summer tire will out perform a high-end all-season when it's warm out, wet or dry just like a dedicated winter tire will perform better in the snow, slush and **** of winter.

 

Yes and no. The letter is its traction grade. AA is the best. It measures the coefficient of friction while sliding over a surface. The numbers are the tread wear rating. The lower the number, the stickier the tire and the shorter the life span. Star Spec's for example are a 200 if recall which is super sticky, but considered a less than 10k mile life span. A 300 rated tire like the BfG KDW's mentioned above is still considerably sticky and should last 20k to 25k. I've heard good things about them as far as grip and longevity. It's also a summer tire.

Most All-seasons are rated at 300 and above. They'll last longer, but won't have near the grip of a summer tire even if they have the same rating.

 

Well assuming u weren't tracking the car or powersliding on the street then that's just ridiculous. I like to kick the tail out in the rain every so often and rotated at 6K for the first rotation and now, at 8000 miles, I'd say I'm 40% worn, if that. (stock Dunlop 2050)
