Most Common Engine Problems with RX-8
Well to start it off my engine has already flooded this winter which i know is a frequent problem with rotaries, but ive got a question: if my car is overdue for a transmission flush could that in any way cause the engine light to come on?

Rotaries DON'T have a frequent problem with flooding.
Rotaries just have a harder time dealing with owners who frequently ignore maintenance.
I haven't heard of one of our engines flooding in the last 12-15 months that didn't also have failing coils, failing plugs, damage or failing plug wires, a weak battery, or a weak starter. If your ignition system is healthy, you won't flood your 8. The ignition system dies slowly over time, so it can sneak up on you, but the coils/wires/plugs need to be changed around 30,000 miles to keep them healthy and your 8 running fine, proper gas mileage, and starting without a flood risk. They can fail as early as 10-15,000 miles, so it is something you have to keep in mind and pay attention to what your 8 is doing so you can detect symptoms.
If your starter or battery fails, it can cause your coils to fail, which can cause your plugs to get fouled up, and all of the above can cause your cat to get clogged. It isn't a scientific measurement, but it seems a single flooding can reduce your cat life by roughly 40,000 miles, so if you flood it around 30-40,000 miles from not changing your coils and plugs, you stand a good chance at clogging your cat on the first flood. Not to mention all the excess unburned gas from your plugs not firing before that point.
Answer Mazmart's questions and we can work with you to pinpoint the problem, but it sounds typical lack of ignition maintenance at the moment.
