We have had the Mazda 121 now AKA Mazda 2 in Australia for 20 years or so, they sell quite a few...
The new Mazda 2 has the same platform as the new Ford Fiesta (2008)
As for the US market, your Mazda NAO Boss said no to the Mazda 2.
If you weigh over 160 pounds, then forget about it as you won't fit in it!
But, I think they would be a good start car for college girls and teenagers.

I have driven a few Mazda 2's and they are really chuck-able,,,,being front wheel drive, light, and a very simple/cheap but effective dead rear axle (3.5" round pipe) with shocks and springs.
Mazdaspeed 2 (Demio) does exist in JDM Only..

i rather spend $20 a week instead of $40. these econboxes are good for the consumer and for new drivers. I rather buy my son this than a silverado or some big pollution friendly truck.
And anyways, the demio has been out for quite some time in the international market. We're finally getting some eco friendly, gas saving vehicles in the states.

Interesting... The car pictured in the article appears to be a diesel. I wonder if Mazda has any plans on bringing that particular model over, or if we'll just be getting the normal SI engine? Even if you don't like this car, a diesel 3 would make a great commuter car.

Probably not, it's harder for diesel powered engines to pass US emission.

Can't at the moment tell you much more...
Mazda here have just released the BT-50 (Ranger) Pick-up which has a 3.0 litre in-line 4 cylinder 16 valve DOHC intercooled turbo diesel.
115KW @ 3,200rpm
380Nm @ 1,800rpm
I am sure its the same design as the 2.0 litre Mazda 6 diesel but for RWD use of course.
