Mazda-Solaris Solar Car Concept for 2013 WSC

http://www.earthtechling.com/2011/09...r-car-concept/

Aurora plans to develop the winning design, known as the Solaris concept car, over the next two years, with the goal of competing in the 2013 World Solar Challenge. (This annual event Down Under challenges solar cars in a race around 1860 miles long, this year from Darwin to Adelaide.)

Of course, development takes capital, and towards that end, Aurora is currently looking for development partners to help make the Solaris concept car a reality.

they spent alot of time with the aero on the taiki. it makes quite a bit of sense to jump off from that design for this type of vehicle for this race

The Solaris actually looks pretty conventional for a top level solar competition car

Most are very flat (room for the solar panels)

With very skinny tires & a thin frontal area (less drag)

With a bubble canopy (again less drag & accomodates the driver laying down to further reduce the size/ frontal area of the car)

With drag reducing cladding over the wheels (or conformal hubcaps)

The interesting part of this concept is that it looks overly stylized for a solar racecar
I'd love to see those head/signal lights make the final racecar, but it will be unlikely as lights/ styling adds weight and consumes power; both contrary to the goals of the racecar.

As a styling study, I love it & think it looks way better than the taiki concept

/\ Could not agree more.

I can't help watch the WSC over the past 2 decades or so as it is always on our news as it always finishes in my city of Adelaide.

It has been interesting to watch the many changes and how much faster these "cockroaches" have become, I think it is HONDA who have won the most or been the fastest competitor.

Will we ever see this as a means of transport...IMO no..
Perhaps in some sort of hybrid or car as a charging source....already seen on a smaller scale 20 years ago.

As we know, no sun, no move.
