Been waiting for someone to update this thread with some juicy leaked info. Can't wait!

With days left - my 3cents for the reveal:
1) Weight? Duh! Miata-like, but gussied up hardtop, wider & longer, adding ~100kg, if weight is even spec'ed. 2) Rotary? Somehow, yes. Main engine, doubtful, but rotary something, maybe e-assist? 3) Tech? Toyota technology swap could mean a Sporty 'Prius-like' drivetrain - think micro-Tesla w/rotary SkyActive Technology? Android or iOS integration? 4) Power? Mazda has never failed to "disappoint" on HP, so less than hoped...esp. if a hybrid technology, but P/W ratio in line for Mazda's 'fun -to-drive' sport vehicles. 5) Price? It's a concept - so priceless. 5) Raison d-etre? JDM's mid-to-late-life crisis seems hell bent on reintroducing some sport cars just because. Seems out-of-touch w/mass market reality, sadly. |
Pretty simple really IMO if it is not a ROTARY ENGINE as a main POWER SOURCE then it is not an RX-9....and frankly Mazda would be pretty stupid to call it one, even though RX means 'Rotary Experiment', confusing the marketplace is the worse known marketing/planning any brand/product can do.(ask Ad Agencies).
I can see it now, here is the all new RX-9, blah blah, owners go over car looking to buy and 'Oh wait' it is a hybrid/whatever electric whatever thing, every other RX- has had a RE under the bonnet as its main engine. Sort of like, here is the all new 2017 CX-9, showroom traffic are then told it has a turbo 4, OK "but I thought it came with a V6", not now it don't. ;) It is just dumb, I don't know ANY car maker who has changed down to a 'smaller' engine and called it the same name without it becoming a bit of a laugh and a sales flop...Current/Last CX-9 (run-out) is having best ever sales, everywhere it is sold. |
I was just about to say this and look what came through.............!
''Mazda has no plans for a market release of the sports car at this point. It will gauge the response during the event, which opens at the end of next week'' All will depend on what people think, how much, etc...can they get the volume they need? Tokyo Motor Show: Mazda resurrects rotary engine for sport concept- Nikkei Asian Review |
I knew it.
|
No surprise there. Everything has been far too silent for even a pre-production unveiling. 3 years or more out, because they would actually have to ... you know ... build it.
|
That's not true, On TV I see them build cars all the time in like an hour.
|
Here's my prediction, going on the teaser photo -
It's too big to be named an RX. It's based on a RWD variant of the Mazda 6 chassis. It's going to be a grand tourer instead of an out and out sports car. It will be called the Cosmo. |
Jeez that is one beautiful looking red S1 RX-8 of 9K's....just sUperB!

All will depend on what people think, how much, etc...can they get the volume they need? this concept will be just an "idea" of a possible future of rotary engine matched with a car. just to show to people and observing the reactions. My interest is for the technical sheet....i'm pretty sure that nothing of mechanic will be showed...but if is hybrid (in theory ) or not will be interesting. this is a sort of RX-evolv (1999)... in brief: 1)interested to overall style (evolution of Kodo) 2) interested about prototype specs...(if is hybrid or not and in which way) |
Only 1 week left, and then we'll see what it actually is. Very exciting.
