Mazda RX-8 Targeted (Insurance)

State of Florida is targeting the RX-8 and calling it an unsafe car. My insurance company just raised my rates by $50.00, when asked why the response was " the Mazda RX-8 is considered an unsafe car". What a joke. I know that my Mazda is the best handling car I have owned. Well maybe the 928 Porsche is the almost matched ride to the mighty RX-8. I dont know why this is happening with my 8, but Im bothered by this. Anyone else has had an increase in their insurance rates? :(

konradk 03-23-2007 08:53 PM

odd. my insurance rate is only $10 more dollars per month than my Civic Ex coupe was in California...

BlueEyes 03-23-2007 08:57 PM

What makes it unsafe?

therm8 03-23-2007 08:57 PM

Sounds like your insurance co. is just trying to excuse raising rates. Check some quotes, and dump the bastards. They are playing the hype from the Chicago wreck, don't buy into it.

BlueEyes 03-23-2007 09:00 PM

What chicago wreck?

Don't believe what one schmuck tells you. The 8 like any other car is usually rated by its own industry loss experience, and the 8 has shown well there.

sunilseru 03-24-2007 01:28 AM

Insurance for the RX-8 is super cheap compared to the S2000, Z or the G35 - atleast here in So Cal.

Rhawb 03-24-2007 02:02 AM

Of all the cars on the road, the 8 is one of the most capable of avoiding a wreck in the first place. If anyone ever tries to tell you it's "unsafe," just remind them that the best way to stay safe is to avoid an accident altogether.

Keef 03-24-2007 02:13 AM

that's bullshit... Call Geico and tell them what happend, or any insurance company and I bet you they would instantly get you set with a plan that is cheaper just too gain trust...

and I think it should be alot more expensive for any two seater sports car compared too a 4 seater... That's the possibility of 100% more life you have too think about if you crash...

OP: What is the name of your insurance company? Is FDOT claiming that the RX-8 is unsafe, or was the claim made by your insurance company?

Totally opposite for me on the other side of the coast here in Eastern PA. Different states, different countries when it comes to a lot of things, insurance being one of them. My 06 S2000 is literally $48 more a year to insure then my 04 RX8 was. My former STI was just insanely high and costly, as everyone already knows. The cheapest of them all? My 06 Mazdaspeed 6. That car is in the same category of a plain old regular Mazda 6. However, I'm preparing for that day when the insurance company changes the category of that car. When I traded in my STI for the Speed 6, my insurance on nearly cut in half. ;)

QBallz 03-24-2007 10:55 AM

I had Geico and got hit by someone without insurance and it was taken care of damn quick and without issue. Now the crappy body shop on the other hand...

I'm with Ameriprise now though because it was ~400-500 a year cheeper than Geico. You have to have a Costco membership though.

I have shopped around for service while with Geico to compare my current rates with other companies, and Geico is still the cheapest around for me. They are also so fast and extremely reliable. Not sure why someone would say don't go with Geico, unless a bad experience has made you partial. If they are one of the cheaper rates you get, they are worth it IMO. If they are more expensive, then perhaps not. It all depends on area. Here, Geico rules. They beat out State Farm and Progressive on a rate, and I tried getting State Farm to match it a couple years back, and they would not. They let me walk, saying, we cannot compete with that rate. Outstanding rates and service here. :)

Justinrx8 03-24-2007 05:34 PM

That's messed up. When I traded in my old Neon for the RX-8, my rates ended up being lowered because they said the 8 was way safer than the skittle.

mysql101 03-24-2007 05:36 PM

I think people mostly dislike GEICO because they buy cops laser guns, which ends up getting you tickets = higher insurance rates.

Hornet 03-24-2007 05:46 PM

I don't remember where it was but I did see somewhere that the 8 was one of the best as far as it's ability to not roll over during an accident. Sounds better than not having your head smashed in an accident to me!

Hornet 03-24-2007 05:55 PM

Here we go!

8 doesn't look unsafe!

Hornet 03-24-2007 06:04 PM

Actually according to this for '06 models it is THE best!

Take that insurance company!

saturn 03-24-2007 06:05 PM

I think some insurance companies have morons working for them and classified the 8 as a 4 cylinder, 4 door sedan when it first came out. This might just be a reclassification into the appropriate category.

Wow, some of those SUVs are at 25% chance of rollover. That is incredible.

chickenwafer 03-24-2007 06:30 PM

My insurance just went up a lot, too. Like $270 a month more without any policy changes!! Not very happy. I have Progressive.
Thinking of switching. Hopefully I can get back to my lower monthly payments, otherwise I have to put the turbo on hold :(

funspork 03-24-2007 09:42 PM

Try state farm, I pay $480 a year with $100 a deductible.

Icemark 03-24-2007 09:59 PM

Hmm, all my cars rate about the same with USAA insurance (except the old one).

2007 BMW 328I $411.43
2006 Mazda RX8 $392.55
2000 BMW X5 $336.46
1999 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner/Limited/SR5 $316.70
1988 Mazda RX-7 Turbo $229.53

Tigster 03-24-2007 10:47 PM

Geico is crap and so are most main stream insurance companies. If you search the customer compalints on these companies youll see. With insurance you get what you pay for, I carry everything I own through Amica Mutual. They are the second highest rated insurance company by consumers just behind Chubb. The problem with these companies are they are VERY selective of who they take.

Does Microsoft suck? Maybe, but I will say their product are actually pretty good, its just that it has fell into the *wrong* hands AKA bunch of dumbass who were too smart to click whatever the hell they see online and download the *FREE SCREENSAVER*

Geico is not the cheapest, but not the most expensive either, plus their claim service was the fastest that I've seen, not even an hour.

Progressive is about 2-300 bucks cheaper, but Im staying with Geico cuz there are too many moron drivers in New York and just in case I have to claim something, Geico will do it fast.

If its 500-600 cheaper per 1/2 year that would be diff story, tho.

Agree all the way. always have an exit stragedy for everything.

PRLegend 03-25-2007 09:51 PM

I dont know about you but my 8 ROCK!!! again I have driven my different sports and muscle cars, and the 8 is still my favorite. Even with a new rotary engine. I will definitely shop around for better rates here in Florida.

P.S. anyone going to see audi's new R8 on wed. I am.

WI Rotory 03-25-2007 10:19 PM

So the NHSTA does rollover tests & some of the vehicles go up on 2 wheels & they give it 2 or 3 stars.?.?. So, how do you get 1 star? I guess the car has to roll over 4 times, burst into flames & take out a small city. What a BS test. If GM & Ford put just a little more into campaign donations, the test could be declared unsafe & they could make it all go away. What a joke.

BlueRenesis82 03-25-2007 10:22 PM

i don't think my rates have changed, but the car has been on storage insurance all winter

JeRKy 8 Owner 03-25-2007 10:38 PM

I don't know what the hell this guy is talking about. I live down here too and I just renewed my policy last week and the premium did not go up in price at all.

Whatever company you're using...change it.

Ike 03-25-2007 11:28 PM

It's pretty normal for rates on sportier cars to go up after they've been out a few years and companies can find an excuse to bump things. If anything I bet it's from minor accidents being more expensive to fix on the RX-8 than they anticipated.

Once you go with a good company, you will see that most of the main stream insurance companies have poor service. If the service was so great all these years why are they all changing to different policies of handling things and coming out with things like concierge services? I pay 800 a year for my 8, and that is with very high limits and low deductibles with every type of insurance on the cars. My wife is a VP for Brown & Brown commercial dept, so we know alot about the insurance companies.

But dont take my word for it, here is a website that lets CONSUMERS rate their insurance company. I use Amica (Top 3) wheres your company?
