I think it is the Senku. I have a feeling we may be interpretting "nagare" as a concept car instead of a design philosophy, with Senku being the first to embrace this "nagare" design direction, no?

 

That appears to be the same clay model that is shown in the January C&D as being the Nagare.

Why even bother putting out a concept of a car that's SO wacky that the odds of it ever seeing the light of day are nearly zero?

Mazda needs to quit screwing around and start showing off some actual cars, not their additions to the HotWheels lineup.

 

Well according to Mazda, they only show what they intend to build.

 

this car is more like a Senku with more current design cues, such as the wheel arches and pillars. You can see a real begining of reality here as opposed to the senku.

Why show these cars and not production ones? Well, the production cars are coming in detroit, and this sorta stuff keeps Mazda on the map and is a form of glorified advertising. If you have a whole design crew coming up with ideas, why not get some press for it and make there creativity worth your while?

Don't get me wrong, I want to the see prototype Kabura more than anyone, but Mazda making design waves is a good thing for the company.

 

I really like the design. It's very cool, smooth, swept back yet aggressive. The single seat, ala McLaren, is cool. Love the gauge design, as with all their concepts lately.

 

This concept is intended to show the design themes and direction that Mazda will take. I wouldn't get upset if it isn't exactly what you want in your own garage. There are aspects that I like and some I don't. I wasn't a fan of the Senku but this is exciting to see some of the style that will come, especially some of the rotary cues. The interior has cool elements as well.

Concept of a concept for Mazda's designs in 2020.

Would anyone in Mazda like to deal with the present?

 

I have to admit that it's not a favorite of mine either. The exterior creates some interest (i.e. not necessarily good) but the overall shape seems to be a little bland (like the Senku) at the same time. That said, it's all too easy to criticize. I always tip my hat to someone who sticks their neck out and tries something new.

 

I stopped reading when I saw the subheading "A concept of a concept"............. wat the hack, give us some hints of future productS!!!... near future, that is.

I just don't understand the purpose of these far out concepts. How does spending the money on this help you create a new product? The Camaro concept and even the Evo X concept at least have significant parts that can be made production ready. Whats the purpose of building something that you know will never see the light of day? I can't even see design elements that would carry over to a new product.

As art its very nice but then leave art to artists or just leave it in concept sketch or 3D model, why actually build it.

There is a answer to this question. I just don't know the answer.

 

I'd take one

 

There are two aspects of such extremism that I understand. It's the same in any kind of art or design. The same effect appears in nature too.

First reason: It's a dipstick to gauge public reaction for a car that will be built in the future. Development cycle for a car is measured in years, not weeks, and you must be ahead of your time, or you lose out. If you design something that looks good to you now, it will look dated when the car comes out. If public reaction is good, the design is probably good to go. If the public reaction is bad, then this is an acceptable loss over blueprinting and stamping out cars that everyone won't care for.

Second reason: It's for progress. We need crazy extremes to pull us somewhere. Are you familiar with thermal equilibrium? It's the same thing. If we didn't have crazy designs, we'd still be driving cars that look like Model T.

So in other words, in 2020 the 30-year-old FD will still look better than this turd.

 

Possibly... in much the same way a Duesenberg still looks better than most of cars on the road today. Progress is maintaining the momentum. It doesn't necessarily mean for the better.

If I recall correctly, the FD also is the production version of a once concept car. I'm fairly certain some 1st gen RX-7 owners expressed your similar disapproval of the 3rd gen concept.

Please take note that I'm not expressing an opinion on the concept vehicle on this thread. I was merely trying to post a helpful reply to a question.
