Well, car people really couldn't care less about the environment, so whatever.
All I know is that EPA are the bastards that put ethanol in American gas, and Mazda finally pulled their head out of their *** and started offering 2.5T as an option for Mazda 6.

Or better yet, a full electric.
Taking lead out of gas was good, but that in no way excuses the fact that our gas is ethanol-stained. It provides no real benefits, with any potential environmental benefit being canceled out by the transportation and production of ethanol(corn is not the best for making ethanol), and it's really just because a bunch of old farts who sit on their corn lobbying the government.

Also the EPA didn't make this decision, it was a bill passed through congress, and the Dept of Energy was far more implicated than the EPA.
So anyway, back to Mazda. I fail to see how this is bad news.

... if you get the ethanol from corn, which apparently only the US thinks is a good idea (probably due to said farts). Brazil has been doing this since the 70s with sugar cane with much better yield per area cultivated and net CO2 reduction. There's nothing wrong with ethanol itself, just happens we're bad at making it.

I am not saying this is bad news, but I just think it really doesn't mean much. Car buying is a big messy equation, and gas mileage is only a part of it. I know non-car people friends who pay more attention to the styling of the car and a lot of people out there also care about the infotainment system. Mazda is good in terms of styling, but some people can't live without Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, which Mazda is still struggling with(hopefully, that will change soon). That's enough for someone to cross Mazda 6 off the list and go for a Honda Accord(which supports both), and they won't even bother looking at the gas mileage(which is probably close enough anyway).
Also, I wonder if Mazda will start adding gears to their AT or make a CVT(yeah, I said it). Seems like they are stuck at 6AT while other companies are all going for 8+AT now. That would probably help with the gas mileage rating if that's what are going for.

I'll still buy a rotary so Mazda #buildit

It's calculated per volume units sold so even with a 2.5T in the CX-9 and now Mazda 6 and even a Rotary in the future, the sales numbers of those models are so low compared to the others that the average would only be minimally affected.

Well, they tried to make RX-8 a more "common" car and look how well that went...
If I have to guess, the upcoming RX(if it happens) will be at least in the same class with Corvette and Viper, although it will still focus more on lightweight and cornering and less on raw power, just like Mazda has always done.
It happens to most mid-size family cars. When Accord was offered with a V6 option, the take rate was less than 20%, and this will probably be the case for the 2.0T that replaced the V6 as well. Most people think the base engine option is "good enough", and that's all they need.

...although anyone who had the cash to buy that 6MT V6 option has a car that has very respectable power in a sedan or coupe'. I have a friend who took his Accord 6MT V6 and added additional suspension goodies to make a nice sleeper and still haul his two kids in baby seats.

Even a Kia can be an exciting drive these days (what's that new one? Stinger?), so Mazda's whole driving excitement focus has competition, but in value for money, I think they still have a healthy advantage. Around here, 3's, 6's and CX5s are selling like hotcakes. Trim level for trim level, a 6 is better value than an Accord or a Camry, and fuel economy is part of that package. If Mazda gives that up, they're done.

I had a Accord V6 Coupe before the 8, and yeah, it was a pretty good car for what it was. I would have kept it, but too bad it was an automatic and I learned that the 6MT is a lot better...
Yeah power is cheap these days. What's harder -- and what made the RX8 irreplaceable for a long time -- is versatility and excellent vehicle dynamics. The Accord is there now, the RX8 was doing it in 2004. The whole Wankel thing is a interesting side note, but the car hits the right notes all around.

I think Mazda's still got it styling-wise. The new Accord looks alright, but Mazda 6 still blows it out of the water. Really hope Mazda can get the CarPlay/Android Auto going, and upgrade their auto trans. After all, competition is strong, as Accord now has Honda Sensing standard.

I am currently driving a 2017 Dodge Durango GT rental daily for a few weeks that is fully loaded and it has changed my opinion of Dodge. Looks are subjective but it handles well for a 7 seater, has everything you could need right down to remote start and even though it is the fully loaded V6 version, it has plenty of power and gets good gas mileage.
