Not sure if this is a dupe. Delete if it is.
Impressive if they do it in time for a 2017 production model.

I'm curious how they'll address the transition problem over from compression ignition to spark ignition at higher RPMs.
Also, I'm looking forward to how Mazda means to manifest the "adiabatic combustion chamber" that they're referring to.

Looks like the "adiabatic combustion chamber" referred to earlier is some sort of cylinder coating, according to this article.

its not gonna work, piston engines is not great for hydrogen, and they will never allow foreign companies like Mazda to dominate the market.

It would mean a coating that resists the transfer of heat... such as that found in the Renny. :o
so we're going hydrogen because toyota and honda both have new hydrogen cars coming out.
as is the case with just about every automotive innovation, Mazda already did the hydrogen car, almost a decade ago, in 2006.
i didn't look at the toyota, because its going to be extremely lame and i'm already bored of it, but the honda is hydrogen to a fuel cell to an electric motor, so its not internal combustion.
i did some looking, and gasoline is very nice as a fuel, because we can fit many hydrogens on a carbon molecule, its something like C2 H18, while hydrogen gas is just H2.
they can't even manage to get 14:1 in US, it's just 13:1, thx to garbage gas we have
and ... how are they gonna do some ultra high compression like 18:1 ... I dunno, magic dust ?

For the SkyActive design that they have, they can't risk 14:1 on US pump gas, so they dropped it to 13:1. I presume that if they are working toward 18:1, that it will have a different and more advanced design than current SkyActive. 13:1 is done because they are inherently trying to avoid detonation. At 18:1 compresion they won't be avoiding detonation, but using it intentionally.
^^^ Not happening
If the information out there is to be believed and there is no reason it shouldn't...
Mazda has stopped any sort of R&D for a rotary powered vehicle.

Not quite accuracte wcs, considering that the day after the CEO made that statement they unveiled a brand new 330cc rotary engine at the Tokyo Auto Show. Not what we are hoping for, and I agree that 2017 is probably not gonna happen for a car with a primary rotary powerplant, but saying that they pulled the plug on the rotary is inaccurate. Development does continue on the rotary...
